Alternate Brain: You'll get health insurance ...

If we decide you're worthy:
...

?We?ll look at a circumstance where someone is ill and hasn?t been insured so far,? Romney said, ?but people who have the chance to be insured ? if you are working in the auto business, for instance, the companies carry insurance, they insure their employees, you look at the circumstances that exist ? but people who have done their best to get insured are going to be able to be covered.?

...

Now, I don't know what the Mittster knows about the auto industry but having been on the business end of it for 40 years, I can tell you this. If you're not working for a dealership, odds are you ain't getting health insurance through your boss. Most independent shops with a handful of employees can't even afford the most basic insurance plans.
...

?If they are 45 years old and they show up and say, ?I want insurance because I have heart disease,? it?s like, ?Hey guys. We can?t play the game like that. You?ve got to get insurance when you are well and then if you get ill, you are going to be covered,?? Romney said.

...

So, some poor schmuck who's been working for minimum wage for all his life, maybe two or three jobs at a time, who's never been offered health benefits through his employer and who certainly can't afford to get it on his own, is just shit out of luck? Is that right, Mitt? Is that what you're telling 30 million people? That they can just up and die because well ... fuck them, they should have been born into money?

And we thought Dick Cheney didn't have a heart.

Is The Wrong Type of Equipment Finance Company For Bad ...

They are all the same, are not they? Absolutely, positively ? not! We are of course talking about the equipment finance company industry in Canada and how your selection of the right partner can deterministically mine Which advantages and Disadvantages you can enjoy ? or suffer with. We prefer positive advantages that can benefit your business with, not Canadian business financing decisions that you will suffer via the wrong choice of a lease partner for your specific needs.

Ok, so what in the heck are we talking about? Essentially there are four types of asset finance partner in the equipment leasing industry in Canada. ! And you thought that a lease finance company was a lease finance company

The first type of partner is the ?captive? ? no you?re not the captive! The term refers simply to finance companies that are owned and literally situated within various manufacturing firms. When clients ask us about finance leases and options they mention specific equipment we are always reminding them to mine if the deterministic Ensure they manufacturer captive finance firm offers asset financing. If they do we can assure you it is probably the best financial terms you will be able to come up with, as well as a better chance for overall approval rate re, structure and other general terms. ? Why is that

It?s to do with motivation ? the captive finance firm is motivated to finance and promote the sale of products using finance leasing options examined as to get the products out to the marketplace. Want to know a secret that should surprise most business owners and financial managers? It?s simply that captive finance firms in a competing industry will finance their competitor?s products, often at better rates, terms and structures. That is simply because the financial transaction will probably give the competing mfr a foothold into your business to promote and sell their own products. So do not think that a great search firm as IBM CREDIT CORP.. is the only firm that wants to finance your products you purchase through them. Others will say

The second main group of asset finance firms in Canada is our chartered banks ? Two major banks have leasing arms that are very significant, others employ lease finance to varying degrees. Our only real comment here is that the credit bar is high and more often than not you have to be a customer of the bank to enjoy the great lease and finance structures they offer.

The third main category of the Canadian equipment leasing company market is actually the largest and most robust. It also requires the maximum amount of knowledge and navigation by Canadian business owners and financial managers. This is the independent lease finance market, where there are least of firms that offer lease financing based on various criteria of asset size, credit quality, geographical preference, industry specialization, etc, etc, etc. have

You a great choice with our partners category 3, the independent finance companies. You can spend hundreds of hours dog or least deterministic mining their credit criteria, they require additional collateral, the size of deals they do, they offer the different lease structures, or ? Alternatively .. provider use our final category for lease provider, the independent lease finance advisor who are knowledgeable intermediaries who know the market, have a strong reputation with lease providers, and can match the advantages you seek in on equipment finance transaction to the right. Subtle nuances in your overall lease structure, Depending on the size of your transaction, can save you thousands of dollars and untold grief at the end of the term of your lease.

So that?s your Canadian lease market overview. Speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor who can guide you through the successful asset finance maze. id=?article-resource?>

Walgreen fiscal 2Q profit slides nearly 8 percent

(AP Photo/Toby Talbot)

Drugstore operator Walgreen Co.'s fiscal second-quarter earnings fell almost 8 percent due in part to its decision to leave the Express Scripts pharmacy network, but the performance still topped analyst expectations.

The nation's largest drugstore chain said Tuesday its net income dropped to $683 million, or 78 cents per share, in the three months that ended Feb. 29. That compares to $739 million, or 80 cents per share, a year ago.

The Deerfield, Ill., company said the Express Scripts split and a mild flu season trimmed its earnings by a combined 10 cents per share.

Revenue climbed less than 1 percent to $18.65 billion from $18.5 billion a year earlier.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected, on average, earnings of 77 cents per share on $18.57 billion in revenue.

Its shares rose 53 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $34.90 in premarket trading.

Express Scripts, a St. Louis-based pharmacy benefits manager, had paid Walgreen to fill prescriptions, but the companies let a contract between them expire at the end of last year after months of talks failed to produce a new deal. Walgreen has said this would hurt its performance during the current fiscal year.

The company said its split with Express Scripts hurt results by about 7 cents per share in the quarter.

Pharmacy benefits managers, or PBMs, run prescription drug plans and use large purchasing power to negotiate lower drug prices. They make their money by reducing costs for health plan sponsors and members.

Express Scripts has said it ended the Walgreen contract because the drugstore chain wanted a premium compared to what Express Scripts paid other pharmacies. Walgreen has disputed that and said it would rather give up the revenue it gets from Express Scripts than continue filling unprofitable prescriptions.

Walgreen also said Tuesday a mild cough/cold and flu season hurt earnings by 3 cents per share in its fiscal second quarter. Flu shots administered this flu season through Feb. 29 totaled 5.5 million, an 11 percent drop compared to last year.

Prescriptions filled in stores open at least a year fell 4.9 percent. Revenue from the front-end, or rest of the store, rose 2.1 percent.

Revenue from stores that have been open at least a year is considered a key indicator of a retailer's long-term health because it excludes stores that recently opened or closed.

Walgreen operated 7,841 drugstores at the end of February, or 151 more than it operated a year ago. It has more locations than competitors CVS Caremark Corp. or Rite Aid Corp.

Real Estate Investing Guidance ? Several Strategies to Revenue ...

The big doggs are made daily using a fantastic investment car called real estate property. With this desire in mind, it is important to choose the strategy along with know the elements that will lead to your success. While using following techniques as a place to start, you can define your ?high level? strategy and focus the methods to increase success.

Buy, Fix, Turn

The profit middle in this predicament is really the good quality and velocity with which you possibly can upgrade home and sell. In case you have the perfect renovation task you need to ensure that there is a strong return on investment (Return) once you are done.

One key to this method is to purchase the most severe property within the best local community and bring it up to requirements that consumers in the area would certainly expect. Trying to get a cheap home or refurbish a great spot with inexpensive upgrades merely won?t work. Understand your industry, know your neighborhood and understand the value that you will be adding to the property.

Hold along with rent

This tactic really depends upon cash flow from rental revenue. Choosing to lease fits that old line, ?you you could make your money when you buy, certainly not when you offer.? If you possibly could find a fantastic property which has a positive income (after all bills) and month to month equity build-up your long-term ROI is going to be great.

Whenever calculating the net income from rent, be sure to include both immediate month to month and possible long-term expenses. Invoice factoring in the installments, interest along with taxes (Hole) is as crucial as the home insurance coverage, condo service fees, maintenance along with management service fees.

Speculation

1 major decision when shelling out is whether you?ll become a trader or a real estate property speculator. The investor buys for short-term profit (acquire low, offer high), local rental income (good cash flow) or even increasing price (renovators); the speculator will buy real estate using long-term plans along with future situations in mind. Supposition involves both buying in the depressed (lower) market or even buying just before a growth.

Knowing when to jump right into a down information mill as interesting as understanding when to get free from a growth! When investing in this technique, you need to complete a thorough investigation of why there is a industry change and when the increased price will take spot.

If you choose to take this road, ensure that you have the available income to support the property (including organic land, getaway property or even options) and also have a clear exit strategy in your mind. This is the most challenging to support; even so, it can be the most lucrative within the long-run.

Final Thoughts

Being a real estate investor can be an interesting step toward financial freedom. However you strategy the market, be sure to have a apparent entry along with exit strategy in place. Also, ensure that your finances can support the ways you choose along with minimize the risk be preserving your real estate teaching current.

Think About These Suggestions When Searching For Car Insurance

So just the proceedings with auto insurance in this era? With everything else going on that you simply, it might be nearly impossible to keep up with of the latest trends and information. Here in the following paragraphs, you can find one of the most important information which you have been looking for. Ask your auto insurer when you can get a discounted rate if you pay for your monthly policy by automatic electronic funds transfer. Some companies give a discount for payments made by automatic EFT transfer because they does not have to send you a bill and they does not have to process any payment checks from you. Before buying a car, think about the expense of the insurance policy for the sort of car or cars you are considering. Generally, the more pricey the vehicle is, the higher the insurance cost will be. Always make sure that you pick up a couple of online auto insurance quotes for more effective comparison that may help you discover cheap auto insurance premiums providing you necessary protection and also coverage.

If you are shopping for new car insurance, you should take some time and find car insurance that provides the best price for the grade of insurance. It is important to get comprehensive auto insurance so that you will are covered for damages for anyone who is at fault in an accident. Never sacrifice coverage for a lower price of insurance. Keep your insurance updated with who is actually driving your car. Plenty of parents forget to take their children off of their insurance even after they have moved out and gotten coverage that belongs to them. The more drivers on your policy the more you are paying so make sure and stay the best to date.

Have an alarm, immobilizer or tracker installed in your car. Reducing the chance of theft saves money for everyone. Having an alarm, immobilizer, or tracker installed in your car will save you some grief and some money on your car insurance. Check to be sure that your provider offers discounts for having it installed first. Automotive insurance can be expensive but to go without it can be a costly mistake. One thing you can do to reduce the premium amount is to combine your auto insurance with your home insurance, or any other insurance you might have. Insurance companies will give discounts if you bundle your insurance needs and buy them all at one company.

See if you qualify for a Safe Vehicle Auto Insurance Discount. If your car has a number of safety features, such as airbags and anti-lock brakes, you may qualify for a reduced rate on your insurance. Discuss everything that your car has with your agent so that you get the best possible rate. Be sure to set your auto insurance payments up for payment every six months, not monthly. Generally, insurance companies will charge a few dollars more for those individuals who pay their premiums monthly. It actually costs the company more in processing and administrative time, so go with the low-cost option and save your money.

Before you purchase a car, you should be thinking about what type of auto insurance you want. In fact, before you put a down payment on an automobile at all, make sure you receive an insurance quote for that particular car. Knowing how much you will need to pay for a certain type of car, will help you make a fiscally responsible decision. Know what is on your driving record when you are shopping for auto insurance. Your driving record has direct impact on the cost of your insurance. A clean driving record will get you better rates than a record full of tickets. Since tickets do not stay in your record forever you can wait until they disappear from your record before you get new quotes.

After you do all the research and you decide exactly which company you will want to use, go over with the agent the type of coverage you will need. Then when you get the policy, read over it and ensure that it is exactly what you requested. You can easily make an error, so it is always good to check. In conclusion, it is definitely difficult to stay on top of all the latest tricks and tips coming out about auto insurance. To make matters worse, information is constantly changing, which makes it nearly impossible to be an expert, unless you try to keep yourself up-to-date. Hopefully, you found this article interesting, informative, and could learn several new things.

In Mexico, Pope calls for faith to overcome violence

Pope Benedict XVI said at a mass for hundreds of thousands in central Mexico that violence and the "power of armies" would not save people, pointing instead to the "higher power" of God.

The pope referred to Christ the King, whose statue towered over the Bicentennial Park where the mass took place, to speak of violence at a time when Mexico is suffering a brutal drug war and military crackdown -- blamed for some 50,000 deaths in five years.

"His kingdom does not stand on the power of his armies subduing others through force or violence. It rests on a higher power than wins over hearts: the love of God," the pope said before an estimated faithful of more than half a million, in the blazing sun in the highly Catholic state of Guanajuato.

The pope flew over the bronze statue of Christ the King by helicopter before being greeted by crowds of singing, applauding, flag-waving faithful in the world's second most numerous Catholic nation after Brazil.

Showing a lighter side to his character, the pope even donned a broad black Mexican sombrero as he travelled in the Popemobile, receiving shouts of "Benedict, my brother, you're Mexican," in response.

The mass was a highlight on the 84-year-old pope's last day in Mexico, before he travels to communist Cuba on Monday.

Guanajuato state saw some of the key battles of Mexico's Cristero War of the 1920s, so-called because its leaders said they were fighting religious persecution for Christ the King, a revered figure in Mexico.

The pope also called on the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint, to "promote fraternity, setting aside futile acts of revenge and banishing all divisive hatred."

Benedict also urged Latin America's faithful "to overcome fatigue related to faith and rediscover the joy of being Christians."

The region, home to 28 percent of the world's Catholics, has seen a drop in believers in recent years, alongside growing rival religions and attitudes that clash with the Church's views on issues such as abortion or gay marriage.

Benedict was due to give a message to Latin American bishops in Leon Cathedral later Sunday.

The pope arrived in the shadow of his charismatic predecessor John Paul II but has been warmly received here.

"The pope will leave me his heart and take mine away with him," said 35-year-old Aydee Luna, who camped out to get a good view of the mass.

Benedict discussed the involvement of young people in Mexico's drug gangs with Mexican President Felipe Calderon Saturday, and met with eight victims of drug violence.

Victims of sexual abuse, meanwhile, accused the Vatican of protecting a notorious Mexican priest -- Marcial Maciel who founded the influential Legion of Christ order -- and expressed frustration that the pope would not meet them in Mexico.

Vatican spokesman father Federico Lombardi told journalists it was "very unfair to say that this pope had sought to hide" the scandal and the Mexican request for a meeting seemed to have "a certain aggressiveness and ambiguity."

Mexican authorities promised maximum security for the trip, with some 5,400 security forces deployed, while the archbishop of Leon, where the pope is staying, even called on local drug gangs to call a truce.

Some here criticized the political context of the visit amid debate over new legislation, which President Calderon's conservative government is backing, to end restrictions on religious ceremonies in public places and a ban on religious involvement in politics.

Benedict has referred to "the fundamental right to freedom of religion," while Guanajuato is also a stronghold of Calderon's conservative National Action Party (PAN), which has roots in Catholic organizations.

The papal visit comes a week before the start of campaigning for July 1 general elections and the main candidates for the presidency attended Sunday's mass.

In Cuba, Benedict XVI will seek to follow in the footsteps of John Paul II, who was credited with strengthening the church's relationship to the state and urging the communist island to open up, though it remains highly isolated.

Benedict said that Marxism "no longer corresponds to reality" on the journey to Mexico.

Best Bets: Time to play 'Game of Thrones'

HBO

Peter Dinklage returns as Tyrion Lannister in "Game of Thrones."

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Ready to lose yourself in a fantasy world this week? "Game of Thrones," the huge hit series from HBO, returns, and the first of two Snow White-themed movies comes to theaters. Here's our look at the week ahead in entertainment.

TV
Finally, "Game of Thrones" is returning to HBO. Ned Stark won't be back, but Tyrion, Daenerys, Cersei, Jaime, Robb, Joffrey, Catelyn and the rest are ready to clash swords again. The second season will loosely follow the plot of "Clash of Kings," the?second book in George R.R. Martin's bestselling series. Fans of the books eagerly await the introduction of new characters including Brienne of Tarth, the woman warrior who fights as well as any man,?and Stannis Baratheon, brother of the late King Robert.?It may be time to?finally give in and order HBO. ?(April 1, 9 p.m., HBO.)

Blake Shelton, Lady Antebellum, Carrie Underwood, The Band Perry and Rascal Flatts will be among the performers at the 47th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, broadcast live from Las Vegas. Shelton and Reba McEntire will co-host, and Shelton is also nominated for two big awards. (April 1, 8 p.m., CBS.)

Movies
Yes, there are two Snow White-themed movies coming out this spring, and they're very different. "Snow White and the Huntsman" is a fantasy drama coming in June, but?arriving this week is the lighter-looking "Mirror, Mirror," a comedic look at the fairy tale. Julia Roberts plays the evil queen, with Lily Collins as Snow White and Armie Hammer as the prince. It'll be satisfying to see a Snow White who can finally fight back. (Opens March 30.)

It's been 35 years since "Slap Shot," the cult classic film about a trio of hockey-enforcer brothers. Some fans of that?movie?have high hopes for "Goon," starring Seann William Scott as a regular Joe who's?good in a fight?and gets sucked into playing hockey even though he can't skate. Liev Schreiber plays the veteran player who drops gloves against Scott. (Opens March 30.)

DVD

Not every critic loved 2011's "A Dangerous Method," but Roger Ebert found David Cronenberg's film "absorbing." Keira Knightley plays a woman who's a patient of two of the most famed figures in psychology, Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender). It didn't play in many theaters, so now's your chance to check it out from the safety of your own couch, psychiatric or otherwise. (On DVD and Blu-ray March 27.)

Four never-before-released-on-DVD episodes of "Mystery Science Theater 3000"are coming out this week. "King Dinosaur, "The Castle of Fu Manchu," "Code Name: Diamond Head," and "Last of the Wild Horses are the films, and the classic shorts "X Marks the Spot" and "A Day at the Fair" also come in for riffing from Joel, Mike and the Bots. (Out on DVD March 27.)

All Circuits Are Busy: Emergency Collapse Communications | Ready ...

Our communications systems are still considered among the world?s most extensive and dependable. However, the infrastructure is extremely outdated and unusual conditions can and do put a strain on our grid. That being said, with the rise of natural and man-made disasters, experts from the private and public sector warn that we are just one?major catastrophic event?away from a complete meltdown of life in America as we know it today.

Consider, for a moment, how drastically your life would change without the continuous flow of energy the grid delivers.

What would our lives be like without access to communication channels telling us what is going on? How vulnerable would we feel not getting our daily dose of local, and world news? For that matter, how would be get in touch with loved ones letting them know how we are? According to James Rawles, author of?How to Survive the End of the World As We Know It, most radio and TV stations have enough fuel to run their backup generators for only a few days.?Ditto for the telephone company central offices (COs). ?If that is the case, then what will happen when those generators run out of power? As he points out, ?there will be an acute information vacuum.?

Communication in a grid down scenario is going to be?vital?in any serious emergency. Therefore, the best way to to prepare for this situation is to equip yourself with the knowledge and tools for communication. Rawles states, ?Once you?ve mastered short-range communications and public service band monitoring, the next step is to join your local Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) affiliate club and study to get your amateur license.??Because many of us are not familiar with the vast array of emergency comm. devices, the following list is recommended in?How to Survive the End of the World As We Know It,?(p.193-198) as well as a brief description of how they operate:

?Shortwave Receiver

Shortwave radio is a type of long-range radio transmission that bounces signals off a layer of the atmosphere to be received in another part of the world.?Shortwave radio depends largely on a part of the Earth?s atmosphere called the ionosphere. The ionosphere, located about 100 miles (160 km) over the earth?s surface, has the unique ability of being able to reflect certain radio frequencies. Unlike AM and FM radio, shortwave radio frequencies can bounce off of the ionosphere and be heard many thousands of miles away. This allows users to be able to hear shortwave radio broadcasters from other countries throughout the world. The ionosphere typically bounces the widest variety of shortwave radio frequencies at night, especially within a few hours of sunset and sunrise.

Rawles suggests that your receiver be a compact, portable general coverage AM/FM/weather band/CB/shortwave receiver. The secret to making a receiver last are to buy a couple of spare hand-reel antennas, show care in putting stress on the headphone jack and power-cable connections, and always carry the radio and accessories in a sturdy, well-padded, preferably?waterproof case.

The top brands are Grundig, Sangean, Eton, Kaito, Sony

Transceivers

A transceiver or transmitter/receiver is a device that combines transmission and reception capability on shared circuitry. In regions where digital coverage is spotty, a transceiver may be equipped for analog to ensure that there will be no loss of signal.?Transceivers can handle analog or digital signals, and in some cases, both.?Communication and reception are dependent on the range of frequencies. For instance, if you live on a piece of land where there are a lot of hills or trees, your range would be affected. Satellites can also play a part in how well the transceiver works and transmit across greater distances. Keep in mind, the more high powered a transceiver is, the more expensive it is, and also the larger it tends to be.

Ham radio transceivers, for example can broadcast and receive transmissions for over 50 miles, and some can let you talk with people from the other side of the planet. One prepper advised me that for a small broadcasting radius (10 miles or fewer), tune all your radios to the 440 MHz band or anywhere from 144 to 148 MHz (each radio must be on the exact same frequency). Conversations on a ham radio are not secure or private, so don?t broadcast any personal information over the airwaves, just in case.

There are two different types of tranceivers:

  • Full duplex -?In a full duplex transceiver, the device can transmit and receive at the same time. Cell phones are an excellent example of a full duplex transceiver, as both parties can talk at once.
  • Half duplex ? A half duplex transceiver silences one party while the other transmits. Many radio systems operate on a half duplex method, which is why people signal when they are going ?out,? alerting the other user to the fact that the frequency is open for transmission.

Experts say that the tranceivers that are portable and can attach to gear or uniforms are good, they do, however have a disadvantage of being weak, with a limited range which can become problematic at times. On Survival Blog, Rawles indicates that he prefers Multi Use Radio Service (MURS) band, since most MURS radios can be programmed to operate in the 2 Meter band, and because they have much better range than FRS (Family Radio Service) radios. But like FRS, they are unregulated in most private use. (No license required!) It is also important to note that the CB channels, FRS channels, and 2 Meter band frequencies will likely be very crowded WTSHTF, particularly in the suburbs, but the less well-known and less populated MURS frequencies will probably be largely available at any given time.

The top brands include MURS,?Yaesu VX-3R VHF/UHF,?Handheld VHF 2 Meter Amateur Radio Tranceiver 5watt, TYT TH-F5?

CB Radio

CB radio or Citizens? band (CB) radio is a communication device that allows people to talk to each other using a radio frequency. The CB radio user has 40 channels to choose from and uses an 11 meter band or 27 MHz. You want to make sure that your CB radio is SSB capable.

Top brands include an Cobra 148GTL,?Midland 1001Z,?Cobra 75 WX ST

Field Telephones

Field telephones are mobile telephones designed for military use, and have the capability to withstand wartime conditions. They can draw power from their own battery, from a telephone exchange (via a central battery known as CB), or from an external power source. There are some that are sound-powered telephones, and do not require a battery.

Rawles believes that having reliable field telephones is essential to coordinate retreat security in a post-TEOTWAWKI world. For semi-permanent installation, it is best to buy cable that is rated for underground burial (UB), to conceal and protect all of your lines. Burying your lines will also prevent both intentional and unintentional lines cuts and breaks. He goes on to further suggest buying extra field phones, so that you can run commo wire to your neighbors and coordinate with them as well. To purchase field telephones, look on eBay, at Army surplus stores, or emergency supply stores.

Top brands are TA-1042 DNVT, TA 838, TA-312

Table Radio

Essentially table radios are contained radio receivers and can mostly be found on eBay. Many can run on battery power, thus making them useful as emergency radios.?Because some table radios still use the vacuum-tube technology, they are virtually EMP proof.?Rawles suggests finding a radio with shortwave bands, such as a Zenith TransOceanic H500 and to purchase a redundant commo gear (headsets, antennas, etc).

Top suggested brands include: Zenith TransOceanic H500, Drake R8B

Some other features to consider when purchasing emergency communications equipment is:

  • You have more control when you have?knobs on the radios rather than buttons.
  • ?Antenna masts that can be telescoped when not in use.
  • Vertical yagis antennas stick out, but horizontal ones blend in. (They just look like television antennas, to the casual observer.) So consider getting one that pivots for operation in both polarizations.?Not only will it give you better OPSEC, but it will give you better versatility.
  • If a license is required to operate
  • The power source it uses to operate.

During emergencies, our total dependence on communications becomes all to clear. And, if the emergency is severe enough, the communication could be limited, if not non-existent for a given amount of time. Each of us have read enough ?survival books to know that the ?comm down? scenario is a very real threat, and happens more often than not. So, when we are on our own, will you have your own communication devices set up to communicate with others or will you take a gamble and stay in the dark?

New Marine Board-ESF position paper sheds light on the gaps in our efforts to monitor and regulate chemical pollution in Europe's seas

According to a recent poll* of more than 10,000 citizens from ten European countries, pollution is the primary concern of the public at large among all issues that threaten the marine environment. A new position paper of the Marine Board-ESF shows that such public concern is not misplaced and is supported by scientific evidence.

About 30,000 of the chemicals currently on the EU market have a production volume higher than one tonne per year. Increasing numbers of these substances end up in rivers, estuaries and seas with potentially damaging effects on marine organisms, ecosystems and processes.

The oceans and seas are of growing strategic importance to Europe, both economically and socially. At the same time, the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems has increased markedly with chemical pollution as one of the main pressures. The latest Marine Board position paper on "Monitoring Chemical Pollution in Europe's Seas: Programmes, Practices and Priorities for research" shows that regulatory frameworks and monitoring programmes do not address the full range of potentially damaging pollutants, and completely overlook many of the 'new' pollutants which have entered use in recent years.

"The level of knowledge and awareness of the presence and potential impacts of new and emerging marine pollutants is still very limited" explains working group co-Chair Patrick Roose from Belgian Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Models (MUMM). Co-Chair Colin Janssen from the University of Ghent adds: "To be genuinely effective, monitoring programmes will need to be dynamic and take into account a continually expanding list of chemical pollutants, the impact that different pollutants can have on organisms, ecosystems and processes, and to attribute efforts and resources according to the perceived risk."

Marine Board Position Paper 16, "Monitoring Chemical Pollution in Europe's Seas: Programmes, Practices and Priorities for research", provides an overview of the existing monitoring and assessment frameworks, a critical evaluation of current monitoring practices, and examples of emerging chemicals of concern and mechanisms used to include them in monitoring programmes.

The paper calls for better coordination, cooperation and harmonization between existing monitoring efforts and those under development, to avoid duplication of effort, loss of expertise and a reduced willingness to fulfil the obligations towards regional conventions. It also recommends implementation of state-of-the-art and more integrated environmental risk assessment procedures to evaluate the full impact of chemical substances on the different compartments of coastal and open sea systems.

"Until today, the monitoring of European seas has been largely based on the measurement of chemical concentrations in water, sediments and biota. As such, they are failing to take sufficiently sophisticated approaches to gain insights on the true impacts of chemicals on individuals, populations and whole marine ecosystems" says Kostas Nittis, Marine Board Chair. He concludes: "Until a more scientifically robust and sophisticated approach is adopted, existing monitoring programmes are only providing a part of the picture."

The Position Paper will be presented at the European Maritime Day in Gothenburg on 21 May 2012 (see http://ec.europa.eu/maritimeaffairs/maritimeday/index_en.htm for full programme).

Apple snags a patent for the Smart Cover's magnetic know-how

Image
No, it doesn't cover the totality of the Smart Cover itself (or any case that folds into a triangle), but Apple has now managed to obtain a patent for one of the accessory's key bits of functionality. First filed in July of 2011 and published by the USPTO today, the patent described as an "accessory device with magnetic attachment" details how magnets can be used in a particular manner to attach a cover to a device (like an iPad) and secure it in place, yet still allow it to be easily released. Again, that doesn't cover all cases that use magnets -- just magnets used in this very specific way. Hit the source link below for all the details in patent-speak.

The Motivation Station: Motivation Monday - Health and Fitness ...

Here at Motivation Monday I've been doing a series on Health and fitness for the last 6 weeks. I've presented challenges, tools, articles, assignments and invited all of you to participate along with me. Here's a little recap of the past 6 weeks along with the links for each post if you are just joining us...

.

Health and Fitness - Time to focus on health and fitness! I presented a list of 10 things we could do in order to prepare ourselves both mentally and physically to start taking better care of ourselves. I called the first 3 weeks our pre-training time.

?

Health and Fitness Challenge - I repeated the 10 things list complete with my answers. I had started daily walks and healthier eating and challenged you to do the same.

?

Final Pre-Training Week - I suggested we start using helpful tracking tools - My Fitness Pal to track food and exercise to get an idea of our average nutrition intake and calories burned during exercise. I also suggested wearing a pedometer to see what our steps are like on average, prior to making any changes or setting new goals.

?

Making Fitness Fun - Just fun little things we can all do to add little bits of fitness to our day.

?

Muscle - Building muscle is so important! I dedicated my fitness focus to building muscle at this point, and I challenged you to grab some weights and learn how to use them too.?

?

Transformation - I read the book Transformation, joined the website and the 12 week spring challenge. I also began the Transformation 5/25 workout plan.

?

I started out slowly but stuck with my goals each week. I'm getting stronger each day, my endurance is building, I've lost 10 pounds, 2 inches from my waist, and my body-fat levels are down a full 5%.?

How are you coming along on your own health and fitness goals?

The hows and whys don't really matter. When it comes down to the bottom line it's pretty simple - either we do it or we don't.?

Wishing you a Motivated Monday!

5 Ways to Stimulate Early Learning in Your Toddler ? Canadian Family

Should you enrol your toddler in preschool before he?s potty trained? It?s a question many parents are pondering now that research from Early Years Study 3?the third such review of early childhood education in Canada since 1999?indicates children as young as two can benefit from preschool programming. The study isn?t suggesting you seat your toddler at a desk but rather that you encourage play-based programming that will stimulate your child and better prepare him for school?and life.

The study found that children who have poor verbal skills at ages two and three (no matter what the socioeconomic circumstance) have trouble coping in kindergarten, are less likely to graduate from high school, are more likely to fail in personal relationships and have difficulties finding steady work. ?There are a number of genetic markers that can be turned on, for good or bad, as a result of a child?s early environment,? says Kerry McCuaig, Atkinson Policy Fellow, Early Childhood Policy at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto and co-author of the study. ?A good learning program can help compensate children for poor home environments and supplement the care and nurturing provided in good homes.?

While there are many government-sponsored early learning centres with free drop-in parent and child programs, you can also encourage learning at home. Here are five great?and easy?ways to help your child get the best start possible.

1. Learn from Daily Activities
Children are hands-on learners, so include them in your daily routines. ?Narrate what is happening and tell them about the sequence of events,? says McCuaig. ?My 18-month-old comes with me on all my errands,? says Beth-Anne Jones, a Toronto-based mom of three. ?I build learning into the errands, such as counting out three boxes of pasta as I put them in my cart.?

2. Make Time for Reading
?The power of reading to your child is enormous,? says Cindy Brandon, a professor and coordinator of the community and child studies foundation program at Centennial College in Toronto. ?Some studies suggest a 40-percent increase in vocabulary when children are read to.? Brandon notes reading also allows an intimate connection with the parent, which your toddler loves. Early Years Study 3 recommends engaging in literacy practices to help maximize your toddler?s vocabulary?such as engaging your toddler in conversation and reading to him for 20 minutes each day. (It doesn?t need to be restricted to bedtime.) Try simple books that explore things your child experiences in everyday life. You may find your child asking for the same book over and over. Toddlers love the repetition, notes Brandon. ?Being able to predict what will happen next gives them control over their world. This is a building block of self-esteem.?

3. Get to the Point
Around age one, children will start pointing to things. ?It?s your job to give the object a name and/or bring it to your child,? says Brandon. Pointing is your child?s way of communicating, and parents need to be responsive in order to encourage social interaction and help with language development.

4. Encourage Free Play
?Create a safe environment, with lots of textures, colours and smells, for your child to explore,? says McCuaig. But don?t expect your child to stay with one activity for long. ?Toddlers have a very short attention span and like to try a lot of different things,? says Brandon. Pay attention to what interests your child and use that interest as a teachable moment.

5. Sing a Tune
Music teaches children about rhythm and repetition, which can stimulate development in a host of areas, especially with language and math skills. ?Children can learn the alphabet by having fun singing the alphabet song or learn math by engaging with the parent in the rhyme ?One, two, buckle my shoe,?? notes Brandon. Your child can benefit from anything with a beat, but simple rhyming songs with a predictable sequence are best. ?Your child gains confidence by knowing what?s coming and learning to predict the words and join in and use the words himself,? says Brandon.
