Mark Webber feels happy with his third podium finish in 2012 Indian Grand Prix ? Formula 1 news

Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber has said that he is feeling very happy with his third podium finish in the 2012 Indian Grand Prix which was held at Buddh International Circuit last week.

Webber performed quite convincingly in the qualifying of the Indian GP and managed to secure second grid position behind his teammate, Sebastian Vettel. Even though, he seemed strong in the race but lost his position to Fernando Alonso of Ferrari because of an issue in his KERS. Nevertheless, he expressed that he is not feeling upset and is very pleased with his third place finish.

Furthermore, he said that although he struggled with few problems in the preceding race but he still enjoyed his fight.

?It was very difficult to defend there because you need the KERS to get you out of that kind of corner,? he said. ?But I enjoyed the fight today. It was difficult race and very difficult for me to get into rhythm. We had few issues we needed to manage in the car, but fair play to the other guys, it was a good tough and solid grand prix.?

In addition, he admired the performance of the Spaniard and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren and asserted that he is aiming to strike back in the Abu Dhabi GP this weekend.

?Lewis and Fernando were very strong on the hard tyres and without KERS it was very difficult. I was happy with the way I drove and I will come back for Abu Dhabi,? he added.

The Australian driver has been one of the most consistent point scorers in the season so far and has successfully attained competitive results for his team.

At present, he is standing at 4th place in the drivers? standings with 167 points. Besides, he is ahead of Hamilton and is behind his main rival, Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus.

On the other hand, his teammate, Vettel is leading the drivers? championship with 240 points and is 13 points ahead of Alonso.

It will be very exciting to see how he performs in the remaining three grands prix of the ongoing season.

Space Saving Tips for Small Bathrooms ? UK Home Improvement Blog

In a typical city apartment or even smaller home, bathrooms are not always as large as you would like them to be, let alone as luxurious as you wish they could be. Older style homes often have baths with overhead showers, while modern homes are limited to showers alone. Luckily for you however, it is still possible to add more space to even the tiniest of bathrooms, allowing you to create an oasis of calm at the end of each day.

How to Add Space to Smaller Bathrooms

Depending on whether you wish to renovate the entire bathroom or simply add a few changes here and there, there are many different ways to add space to smaller bathrooms. Some ideas include the following:

  • If your bathroom has a bath only, adding a shower attachment can be done without too much drastic work. Ideally, this option works best if you have a single tap however, which allows the attachment to work with your existing plumbing. You can purchase attachments and install them yourself if you have sufficient DIY skills, or have them installed by your handyman or plumber if you prefer a professional job.
  • Fitting bathroom shelves is a simple way to add more storage. Wall mounted shelves can be attached using brackets, and used to keep towels, bath products and other items. You can also purchase wall cabinets if you have enough space, which can double up for storage and the all-important bathroom mirror.
  • Corner baths are a great way to optimise on limited space, taking up far less space than regular shaped baths. While this job is best left to the experts, it is worth considering if your bathroom only has a shower or if your current bath takes up a lot of room. As an added perk, many modern corner baths can be sunken, giving a luxurious touch to your bathroom.

Hooks and rails can also be added to maximise storage space without adding to the clutter, while from an aesthetic point of view, large mirrors placed over the bath will help add the illusion of space without making any major structural changes. As a final bit of advice, it is best to avoid dark colours or busy wallpaper in small bathrooms. Instead, stick to light, neutral shades to make the room seem larger and more spacious. Along with these tips, you will be able to create the perfect bathroom, regardless of its size.

HHS Agrees to End Practice of Denying Medicare Coverage for ...

Edith Masterman, a Plaintiff in Lawsuit Seeking end to Medicare practice of denying Skilled Care & Home Care and Therapy benefits to Chronically Ill for patient's inability to improveThe U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has entered into a proposed settlement of a lawsuit in which HHS agreed to revise portions of the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual to stop the long-standing practice of denying Medicare Skilled Care and related home health and therapy benefits on the basis of a lack of improvement of the patient.

The proposed Settlement Agreement, filed October 16, 2012 in a lawsuit pending in the U.S. District Court in Vermont, may result in a significant increase in future Medicare benefits to cover ?Skilled Care? (delivered by a nurse or doctor) along with related home health and therapy services for Medicare patients who suffer from chronic conditions.

The proposed Settlement Agreement must be approved by the Court before it would go into affect. According to reporting by the New York Times, the parties have indicated that Court approval is expected.

According to the Center for Medicare Advocacy, which is plaintiffs? counsel in the pending lawsuit, ?Nearly half (46%) of all Medicare beneficiaries have three or more chronic conditions, the majority of which need therapeutic care.?

However, patients with chronic conditions (such as paralysis, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer?s Disease, Parkinson?s Disease, or Lou Gehrig?s disease) often are unable to demonstrate that they would improve as a result of the Skilled Care and related home health care and therapy services they may need in order to avoid deterioration of their conditions and further hospitalizations. Therefore, up to now they frequently have been denied Medicare coverage of such care under the so-called ?Improvement Standard? that has long been applied by Medicare providers and suppliers.

Terms of the Settlement

The proposed Settlement Agreement was reached between the government and plaintiffs? counsel in a lawsuit that had been filed in January, 2011 by the nonprofit Center for Medicare Advocacy (CMA).

In the lawsuit, CMA acts as legal counsel for a group of chronically ill patients who claim that they were denied Medicare benefits for needed Skilled Care and related therapy and home health care because they were unable to demonstrate improvement due to their their chronic conditions.

In the litigation, plaintiffs challenged the practice of denying coverage on the basis of failure of the patient to improve, arguing that the ?Improvement Standard? is not specifically permitted under the Medicare Statute and therefore violates the law. In settling the proposed lawsuit, the government did not admit that the practice violates the law, but voluntarily agreed to change it as provided in the proposed Settlement Agreement.

If the Settlement Agreement is approved by the Court, HHS has agreed that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will issue revisions to portions of the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual to make clear that in the future claims for Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), Home Health (HH), Outpatient Therapy (OPT) or Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF) benefits shall no longer be denied on the basis of a failure or inability of the patient to improve, provided that (i) the patient does have a medically established need for ?Skilled Care? as part of such requested care, and (ii) all other existing Medicare standards and requirements for coverage by such benefits are met.

The changes would apply going forward for all people on Medicare who are 65 and older, as well as for those of any age with disabilities who qualify for Medicare. The changes would apply both to the traditional Medicare program and to private Medicare Advantage plans.

If the Court approves the Settlement Agreement, HHS also agreed that as part of the proposed settlement, it would conduct a specified educational campaign to educate Medicare providers and suppliers about the revised standard, with oversight of the campaign by plaintiffs? counsel in the lawsuit. This process would be finished within a year after the Court?s approval of the Settlement Agreement.

As part of the proposed settlement, anyone who has received a Final Denial of a Medicare Claim for any of the services listed above at any time after January 18, 2011 (the date on which the lawsuit was filed), on the sole basis of failure or inability to meet the so-called ?Improvement Standard,? could opt in to a class of plaintiffs that would be certified by the Court. This would mean they could file a claim within a stated period of time to have their Medicare Claim re-examined and paid if they meet the new standard.

More information about the proposed Settlement Agreement is available on the website of the Center for Medicare Advocacy (CMA), counsel to the plaintiffs in the pending lawsuit.

Background

As referenced above, the plaintiffs in the lawsuit allege that the long-standing practice of Medicare providers and suppliers of denying such claims on the basis of failure to meet the so-called ?Improvement Standard? is illegal and in violation of the Medicare Statute.

As described by the Center for Medicare Advocacy (CMA), ?the ?Improvement Standard? is shorthand for Medicare coverage denials issued on the grounds that the individual?s condition is stable, chronic, not improving, or that the services involved are for ?maintenance only.?

?The use of an Improvement Standard is not supported by Medicare law. Under the law and related regulations it is not necessary to improve in order to get coverage,? CMA alleges.

?The Improvement Standard?s application unfairly targets paralyzed individuals, including veterans, people with Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer?s Disease, Parkinson?s Disease, and ALS, who need the care they are being denied,? CMA further alleges.

Judith A. Stein, Director of the Center for Medicare Advocacy, told the New York Times that ?As the population ages and people live longer with chronic and long-term conditions, the government?s insistence on evidence of medical improvement threatened an ever-increasing number of older and disabled people.?

?In many cases, she said, the denial of coverage led to a denial of care because most people cannot afford to pay for these services on their own,? according to the Times.

Mrs. Edith Masterman, one of the individual plaintiffs in the case is quoted by CMA as saying, ?Following a hospital stay and three months in a rehabilitation facility in early 2010, I was released to home care. Although my doctors state that I need physical therapy, the home health agency denied me this care because, as they say, my wound is chronic and will never heal and therefore these services are not covered by Medicare.?

A video of Ms. Masterman in her home, describing her situation, is posted on the website of the Center for Medicare Advocacy (CMA):

According to reporting by the New York Times, ?The lead plaintiff, Glenda R. Jimmo, 76, of Bristol, Vt., has been blind since childhood. Her right leg was amputated below the knee because of blood circulation problems related to diabetes, and she is in a wheelchair. She received visits from nurses and home health aides who provided wound care and other treatment, but Medicare denied coverage for those services, saying her condition was unlikely to improve.?

?Another plaintiff, Rosalie J. Berkowitz, 81, of Stamford, Conn., has multiple sclerosis, but Medicare denied coverage for home health visits and physical therapy, on the ground that her condition was not improving,? the Times reported.

Dr. Nicholas LaRocca of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which joined in the lawsuit brought by the Center for Medicare Advocacy (CMA), is quoted on CMA?s site as saying, ?We must terminate the misapplication of policy which is preventing people with MS and other chronic illnesses from receiving medically necessary care to help avert physical and cognitive deterioration or maintain optimal functioning.?

?This deterioration often leads to more intense, more expensive services, hospitalization or nursing care,? he added.

The plaintiffs in the case include, in addition to the individual plaintiffs and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Parkinson?s Action Network, Paralyzed Veterans of America and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, an advocacy group.

Position of HHS and CMS; Implications for Medicare Costs

According to the New York Times, lawyers for the government declined to comment on the Settlement Agreement, because the litigation remains pending.

HHS, however, had already eased certain restrictions on Medicare coverage of home health and therapy benefits at the time the lawsuit was filed. In a release announcing the lawsuit, Gill Deford, an attorney with the Center for Medicare Advocacy (CMA) said, ?While we thank CMS for their recent clarification of Medicare coverage for home health services ? including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology services ? the clarification does not undo conflicting policies and practices. We must move forward to ensure people do not suffer needlessly.?

As described above, the Settlement Agreement, if approved by the Court, will clarify how those already denied the applicable Medicare benefits on or after January 18, 2011 (the date the lawsuit was filed), on the basis of failure or inability to improve, may be able to apply for re-review and possible payment of their claims under the revised standard.

According to the New York Times, ?Neither [Judith A. Stein, the director of the Center for Medicare Advocacy] nor Medicare officials could say how much the settlement might cost the government, but the price of expanding such coverage could be substantial.?

?While the settlement is likely to generate additional costs for the government, it might save some money too. For example, physical therapy and home health care might allow some people to avoid more expensive care in hospitals and nursing homes,? the New York Times reports.

The likelihood that these changes in Medicare policy will actually save the government money ? by eliminating the significantly more expensive Medicare costs of repeat hospitalizations of the chronically ill that may be avoided with the provision of the covered in-home or therapy services ? is also mentioned in several comments posted by nurses and other healthcare professionals following the New York Times article about the settlement.

Additional information about the proposed Settlement Agreement is available on the website of the Center for Medicare Advocacy (CMA), counsel for the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

(AP) ? The foiling of a planned al-Qaida terror plot in Jordan underscores a new subplot in the story of the Arab Spring: Things are heating up for King Abdullah II, a Western-oriented monarch who has run a business-friendly, pragmatic monarchy with some trappings of democracy.

Jordan, a key U.S. ally that sits at a strategic crossroads between neighboring Syria, Iraq, the Palestinian territories, Israel and Saudi Arabia, has so far weathered 22 months of street protests calling for a wider public say in politics.

But this week's announcement that Jordanian authorities had thwarted an al-Qaida plan to attack shopping malls and Western diplomatic missions in the country has raised fears that extremists could take advantage of growing calls for change to foment violence.

The king also has been working overtime to fend off a host of domestic challenges, including a Muslim Brotherhood boycott of parliamentary elections, increasing opposition from his traditional Bedouin allies and an inability to keep the Syrian civil war from spilling over the border.

So far, Abdullah has largely maintained control, partly by relinquishing some of his powers to parliament and amending the country's 60-year-old constitution. His Western-trained security forces have been able to keep protests from getting out of hand. And most in the opposition remain loyal to the king, pressing for reforms but not his removal.

The stakes are high: Abdullah is a close friend of the United States and has been at the forefront in its global war on terrorism, including in Afghanistan. Jordan serves as a buffer zone to Saudi Arabia, another Sunni Muslim country, and to Israel, a friend under a peace treaty signed in 1994. The kingdom hosts the largest Palestinian population outside the West Bank.

"The worst nightmare would be for Israel and Saudi Arabia," said liberal lawmaker Jamil Nimri. "Jordan shares the longest border with Israel and is one of its few remaining Arab friends, while for the Saudis, it's a neighboring country with a similar monarchy system in trouble."

Concern over Jordan's stability was underlined last month, when its U.S., British and French allies quickly dispatched their military experts to help Jordanian commandos devise plans to shield the population in case of a chemical attack from neighboring Syria.

Jordan is worried that Syrian President Bashar Assad might lose control over his chemical weapons in the civil war and that his stock could subsequently fall into the hands of al-Qaida or Lebanon's Islamic militant group Hezbollah.

More than 210,000 Syrian refugees also have fled to the kingdom to escape the violence at home, straining basic services like water, electricity and the health care system.

In the past three months, dozens of Jordanian policemen were wounded in violent riots at a dust-filled refugee camp packed with 35,000 Syrians near the northern border.

A growing number of stray Syrian missiles also have fallen on Jordanian villages in the north in recent weeks, wounding several civilians as Assad widened his offensive against rebel holdouts near the Jordanian frontier.

A Jordanian border patrol officer also was shot dead Monday during army clashes with eight militants who sought to illegally cross a border fence into Syria.

Hours before the clash, Jordan announced that authorities had arrested 11 suspected al-Qaida-linked militants for allegedly planning to attack shopping malls and Western diplomatic missions in the country with explosives and rockets.

Two Arab diplomats, insisting on anonymity because they are not allowed to make press statements, said regional intelligence indicates that militants see Jordan as an "easy prey" as they try to consolidate their presence between hot spots.

"The Jordanian people can never enjoy complete stability when our country is surrounded by wars and uprisings," said Yousef Matarneh, a 45-year-old civil servant.

Abdullah has tried to forestall Arab Spring-style uprisings that have toppled autocratic regimes in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and Libya, and led to the war in Syria.

His reform roadmap envisions parliamentary polls as a vehicle toward having an elected prime minister for the first time in Jordan's history. Previously, it was the king's prerogative to appoint the premier.

Abdullah also has been trying to buttress his ailing economy, straining under $23 billion foreign debt, a record deficit of $2 billion and rising inflation, by inviting foreign investment and marketing Jordan as a tourist destination.

"If you want to change Jordan for the better, there is a chance, and that chance is through the upcoming elections," he told a gathering of 3,000 prominent politicians and businessmen on Tuesday. "There is a way, and that way is through the next parliament."

But the opposition, dominated by the powerful Muslim Brotherhood, is boycotting the Jan. 23 vote and vowing to continue street protests.

The Islamists argue that a new election system gives too much weight to traditional tribally based conservatives loyal to the monarchy who dominate local politics. The government insists that Jordan's system is used by many countries, and that the Islamists' preferred all-party list system would inflate their numbers.

Many Jordanians are keen to avoid the turmoil that followed the revolution in Egypt, which led to the election of a Muslim Brotherhood member as president of the Arab world's most populous nation.

"We will not trade our stability for anything. People in the region envy us for it," said 25-year-old Mohammed Shneikat, who works at a music store in Amman.

The king's supporters point to voter registration that has exceeded 2.3 million, or 33 percent of the country's 6 million population.

"Nobody wants the king to abdicate," said independent lawmaker Hosni Shiyyab. "There's a consensus among supporters and opponents that he should stay because he is a stabilizing factor among the different segments of the society."

There are, however, signs of increasing opposition. Street protests in Jordan have remained largely peaceful, but recent slogans have begun pointing to the king, breaking a longstanding taboo against criticizing him.

"Abdullah, listen well, your reforms are cosmetic. The Arab Spring's next stop is Amman," chanted 7,000 Islamist opposition and youth movements during a recent protest in the Jordanian capital ? the largest gathering in months.

Even the king's traditional supporters have started to voice unheard of criticism, with young Bedouins staging small rallies to rebuke the monarch, although their families still form the bedrock of support for Abdullah's Hashemite monarchy.

"He gave us nothing. In fact, he made us poorer and without jobs," lamented Yazan, 26, a high school teacher who earns $300 a month. He declined to give his last name fearing government reprisal.

BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan (AP) ? A Russian spacecraft surged into clear skies over the Central Asian steppe Tuesday, carrying a three-man crew on their way to the International Space Station.

The engines of the Soyuz TMA-06M sent a powerful roar across the tinder-dry countryside of southern Kazakhstan as scheduled in the afternoon to deliver NASA astronaut Kevin Ford and Russians Oleg Novitsky and Yevgeny Tarelkin to the orbiting laboratory.

"I spoke with the astronauts after they reached orbit," Russian Space Agency chief Vladimir Popovkin said. "They feel well. Everything went fine, despite the windy conditions."

After a two-day journey, the astronauts will join U.S. astronaut Sunita Williams, Russia's Yuri Malenchenko and Aki Hoshide of Japan's JAXA agency.

The crew will face what may be the heaviest workload in the 12-year history of the space station over its first week.

Tasks will include handling the departure of a Dragon cargo vehicle and a spacewalk to carry out repair operations on the station.

Of the three in Tuesday's takeoff, only Ford has flown in space before. He spent two weeks as pilot of the space shuttle Discovery in 2009 on a mission to transport scientific equipment to the space station.

Tuesday's launch took place in unseasonably warm conditions and afforded the small crowd of space officials, well-wishers and family members of the astronauts at the viewing platform a clear sight of the rocket disappearing into the distance.

Within a few seconds of the launch, the first set of booster rockets detached as planned in a puff of smoke and fell to earth leaving a streak of black fumes in its wake.

An announcer informed the crowd of the craft's progress over a loudspeaker. After nine minutes, he announced the Soyuz had reached orbit, prompting a burst of applause for the successful start to the mission.

Televised footage showed the soft toy hippopotamus mascot dangling over the crew floating in weightlessness.

The crew will be tightly packed into the cramped Soyuz for 48 hours before finally docking with the space station.

For the first time since 1984, the manned takeoff took place from the Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome's launch site 31.

The pad that is normally used for such missions? the one where Yury Gagarin became the first human to travel into space in 1961, is being modernized. Site No. 1, better known as Gagarin's Start, was last overhauled in 1983.

The need for a back-up launch site became particularly acute with the decommissioning of the U.S. shuttle fleet in 2011, when Gagarin's Start became the only operating pad available for manned launches to the space station.

"We had no doubts that we could launch astronauts from here, but this has completely convinced us ... that from 2014 we will be sending people from the Gagarin Start," Popovkin said after congratulating space agency workers.

Manned launches from Baikonur take place about four times a year. Popovkin said launches of a modernized version of the craft that flew Tuesday, Soyuz-2, would begin from Gagarin Start in 2016.

Space officials have in recent weeks sought to address misgivings over billions of dollars spent to develop the International Space Station.

Ford said Monday that the bulk of the scientific benefits from the orbiting laboratory will be seen over the coming decade.

"The first 10 years were really intensive in the construction side of it, bringing all the pieces together and really getting the science enabled," Ford said.

Ford, who hails from Portland, Indiana, said the station would now enter its "utilization phase."

"We're going to learn the bulk of everything we know about the science that we're doing up there in the next decade," he said.

The growing capabilities of private space vehicle companies also have boosted hopes that NASA will be able to focus increasingly on more ambitious exploration projects.

Earlier this month, California-based SpaceX successfully delivered supplies to the space station on a craft called Dragon, the first official shipment under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA. It calls for 12 such shipments.

The Ford, Novitsky and Tarelkin stay on the station also will see the first ever arrival of "Cygnus," a commercial cargo vehicle from the Orbital Sciences Corp., of Dulles, Virginia, scheduled for December.

"These companies ... are themselves learning a lot about getting to and from low-earth orbit and picking up that task so that NASA can indeed begin to concentrate on things out of earth orbit and going out further into our solar system," Ford said.

Castro: I don't 'remember what a headache is'

Amid rumors of the former Cuban leader's death, Fidel Castro showed up at a hotel over the weekend and state media published new photos of him. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

By NBC News wire services

HAVANA -- Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro dismissed reports that he was dead or near death in an article published on Monday in Cuba's state-run press.

He accused news agencies and enemies of Cuba of spreading "stupidities" about him, particularly a report from a Spanish newspaper last week that said he had suffered a massive stroke and was in a vegetative state.

"Birds of bad omen! I don't even remember what a headache is," he wrote.

The article in Communist Party newspaper Granma was accompanied by photographs?(in Spanish) showing him walking outside on a sunny day on what appeared to be a farm.

He wore a straw hat and red plaid shirt, used a walking cane and, in one photo, held a copy of Granma from Friday.

Photos of Cuba's Fidel Castro were published Monday in the country's state-run press following rumors that the 86-year-old was in failing health.

The photos, Castro said, were "proof of what liars they are."

Intense speculation
Castro's health has been the subject of intense speculation for years, but the rumors gained force in recent days after he failed to publicly congratulate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a top ally, on his Oct. 7 electoral victory.

The 86-year-old former Cuban leader has not appeared since March, when he was shown greeting visiting Pope Benedict XVI, and he has also ceased writing his once-constant opinion pieces, the last of which appeared in June.?

On blogs and Twitter, he has been declared dead or near dead numerous times, spurred by a long, unexplained absence from the public eye.

Elias Jaua, a former Venezuelan vice president, said Sunday he had met with the Cuban revolutionary leader over the weekend, showing reporters pictures of the meeting and saying Castro was in good health and lucid.

Castro had not written one of his "Reflections" opinion columns for state press since June 19 or been seen publicly since March.

His last few Reflections were also Twitter-like in their brevity and slightly oddball in content, which left Cubans wondering about their former leader's mental state.

'I like to study and I study'
But Castro said he had decided to stop the columns for a practical reason.

Fidel Castro re-emerges, proving he's alive during trip to farm

"I stopped publishing Reflections because surely it is not my role to occupy the pages of our press, dedicated to other work the country requires," he said.

As for how he spends his time now, Castro wrote, "I like to write and I write. I like to study and I study."

A look at the life and times of the Cuban leader who has outlasted nine U.S. presidents.

Castro also used the article to defend his role in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, which 50 years ago this month brought the world to the brink of nuclear war when the United States discovered that the Soviet Union had placed nuclear missiles in Cuba.

Complete World coverage on NBCNews.com

Castro said Cuba viewed the missiles as necessary to stopping a U.S. invasion of the island 90 miles from Florida and had no regrets about its decision.

"Our conduct was ethically irreproachable. We will never apologize to anyone for what we did," he said.

Castro stepped down in 2006 following a severe illness, handing power to his brother Raul.?

New finding could pave way to faster, smaller electronics

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? University of California, Davis, researchers for the first time have looked inside gallium manganese arsenide, a type of material known as a "dilute magnetic semiconductor" that could open up an entirely new class of faster, smaller devices based on an emerging field known as "spintronics."

Materials of this type might be used to read and write digital information not by using the electron's charge, as is the case with today's electronic devices, but by using its "spin."

Understanding the magnetic behavior of atoms is key to designing spintronics materials that could operate at room temperature, an essential property for applications.

The new study used a novel technique, hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy or HARPES, developed by Charles Fadley, distinguished professor of physics at UC Davis and the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and recent UC Davis doctoral graduate Alexander Gray, together with colleagues at LBNL and in Germany and Japan.

The research represents the first major application of the HARPES technique, which was first described in a proof-of-principle paper by Gray, Fadley and colleagues last year.

The latest work was published Oct. 14 in the journal Nature Materials.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy uses Einstein's famous photoelectric effect to study materials. If you bombard atoms with light particles -- photons -- you knock out electrons, known as photoelectrons, which fly out at precise angles, energies and spins depending on the structure of the material.

For many years researchers have used "soft" or low-energy X-rays as the photon source, but the technique can look only at the top nanometer of a material -- about five atoms deep. Fadley and Gray developed a method that uses "hard," high-energy X-rays to look much deeper inside a material, to a depth of about 40 to 50 atoms.

The researchers selected gallium manganese arsenide because of its potential in technology. Gallium arsenide is a widely used semiconductor. Add a few percent of manganese atoms to the mix, and in the right conditions -- a temperature below 170 Kelvin (about 150 degrees below zero Fahrenheit), for one -- it becomes ferromagnetic like iron, with all of the individual manganese atomic magnets lined up in the same direction. Physicists call this class of materials dilute magnetic semiconductors.

There were two competing ideas to explain how gallium manganese arsenide becomes magnetic at certain temperatures. The HARPES study shows that, in fact, both mechanisms contribute to the magnetic properties.

"We now have a better fundamental understanding of electronic interactions in dilute magnetic semiconductors that can suggest future materials," Fadley said. "HARPES should provide an important tool for characterizing these and many other materials in the future."

Gray and Fadley conducted the study at the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility, operated by the Japanese National Institute for Materials Sciences. New HARPES studies are now under way at LBNL's Advanced Light Source synchrotron.

Other authors on the paper are Jan Min?r, Juergen Braun and Hubert Ebert, Ludwig Maximillian University, Munich, Germany; Shigenori Ueda, Yoshiyuki Yamashita and Keisuke Kobayashi, National Institute for Materials Science, Hyogo, Japan; Oscar Dubon and Peter Stone, LBNL and UC Berkeley; Jun Fujii and Giancarlo Panaccione, Istituto Officina dei Materiali, Trieste, Italy; Lukasz Plucinski and Claus Schneider, Peter Gr?nberg Institute, J?lich, Germany. Gray is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences, Stanford University, and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, Calif.

The work was supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Energy and the governments of Japan and Germany.

Pediatricians offer first report on organic foods

CHICAGO (AP) ? Parents who want to reduce their kids' exposure to pesticides may seek out organic fruits and vegetables, but they aren't necessarily safer or more nutritious than conventional foods, the nation's leading pediatricians group says in its first advice on organics.

Science hasn't proven that eating pesticide-free food makes people any healthier, the American Academy of Pediatrics said.

"Theoretically there could be negative effects, especially in young children with growing brains," but rigorous scientific evidence is lacking, said Dr. Janet Silverstein, a co-author of the academy's new report and a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

"We just can't say for certain that organics is better without long-term controlled studies," she said.

The report was published online Monday in Pediatrics and echoes a Stanford University study released last month. That research concluded that while eating organic fruits and vegetables can reduce pesticide exposure, the amount measured in conventionally grown produce was within safety limits.

Since organic foods tend to be costlier, a good strategy for penny-pinching parents concerned about pesticides is to buy only organic versions of foods with the most pesticide residue ? including apples, peaches, strawberries and celery, Silverstein said.

But the pediatricians group says higher prices on organic foods might lead some parents to buy fewer fruits and vegetables ? not a good strategy since both have health benefits including reducing risks for obesity, heart disease and some cancers.

Parents should aim to provide their families a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whether organic or not, along with plenty of whole grains and low-fat or fat-free dairy products, the report says.

Religious Affiliation in America ? First Thoughts | A First Things Blog

This month?s Pew Report on religious affiliation in America has drawn much well-deserved attention, particularly two of its findings: a continuing increase in the percentage of Americans who do not identify with any religion ? the ?Nones? ? and a continuing decrease in the percentage who identify as Protestant. In the last five years, the Nones have gone from roughly 15% of American adults to roughly 20%. The increase is especially pronounced among adults under the age of 30, a third of whom say they are religiously unaffiliated. And, for the first time since Pew started polling, the percentage of adults who identify as Protestant has dropped below 50%.

These statistics could have profound significance for the future of American religion and law. Take the increased percentage of Nones among people under 30. In a couple of decades, this age cohort will be running American cultural, legal, and political institutions. Traditionally, American institutions have viewed religion as a good thing, both for individuals and society. Will they continue to do so if they are run by people who themselves lack a religious identity, who view religion, at best, with indifference? Will legislatures accommodate religious minorities as readily? Will courts defer to traditions that reflect assumptions large percentages of the population no longer share? It seems doubtful.

The media has jumped on the rise of the Nones, predicting everything from a political realignment (good news for Democrats, bad news for Republicans) to major changes in education and family structure. Maybe ? but we need to be cautious. We shouldn?t assume that the increase in the percentage of Nones will remain stable over time. Generations typically become more religiously observant as they age (though this generation seems to be starting from an unusually non-religious position). More important, the future has a way of surprising us. For example, according to Putnam and Campbell?s recent study, American Grace, a marked upsurge in religious observance among young adults (ages 21-34) occurred in America between 1952 and 1964. On the basis of that upsurge, one would have predicted a bright future for American religious institutions over the next couple of decades. Let?s just say things didn?t turn out that way.

Similarly, we shouldn?t assume that the decline of American Protestantism will radically transform our religious culture. American religion has so completely adopted the Protestant form that the decline of the original model ? even if it continues ? seems unlikely to change things. In America today, even Buddhists and Hindus organize themselves as self-governing, Protestant-style congregations, with entrepreneurial clergy, Sunday Schools, and community outreach programs. The New England way lives on in the temples of Orange County.

The statistics in the Pew Report are an important indication of where are today, and Pew deserves a lot of credit for compiling them. And maybe we really are on the verge of something unprecedented in American religious life. We shouldn?t assume, though, that we can predict the future.

Mark Movsesian is Director of the Center for Law and Religion at St. John?s University.

Mr. Knight's Double Bills of Blood (Part Nine) | Very Aware | Movie ...

I love October. The weather, the leaves changing color, the candy, the Halloween decorations?

?and the movies. Goddamn, you get to be a horror fan without anyone looking at you like you?re some bugged out dude sitting by the playground. For one month, fright fans are granted carte blanche because it?s ?in the spirit of the season? (unless you?re watching the?GUINEA PIG?films, in which case you?re still just a ?weirdo?).

In short, October is badass.

When I kept a personal blog, I used to watch a horror movie each day in October and then write about them at length, just like everyone else who isn?t the Osiris of this Horror Shit, Brian Collins of?HMAD.?Before that, I?d usually just jot down a list of the films I watched and on what day (fuck your judgement, I like lists). Now I bring this tradition to Very Aware, only I?ve put a bit of a spin on it.

Thirty double features in October ? that?s what I?m going to bring you. The dual bills of horror, cult, sci-fi or exploitation that I?m using to ring in my favorite month. Most of these pieces will be quick (a meaty paragraph or so) while others will be full-blown reviews. It all depends on how much I love (or hate) the films.

All of this leads up to my favorite day of the year: the Exhumed Films 24-Hour Horrorthon (October 27th and 28th); an entire day where, from noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday, 35 or 16mm prints of great (or horrifyingly awful?depending on the group?s mood) genre films from the 60s, 70s and 80s are projected nonstop with trailers, shorts and other oddities in between. It?s all courtesy of the fine folks in?Exhumed Films?(Dan Fraga, Jesse Nelson, Harry Guerro and Joseph Gervasi), who have been putting on unbelievable double features for the past fifteen years, and the 24-Hour Thon for five.

Features seventeen and eighteen revolve around a pair of weird, atmospheric ?70s flicks and a double shot of Wes Craven?

Feature #17 ? 10/17/12 ? A Pair of Little Seen Atmospheric Oddities From the ?70s (DEATHDREAM [1974] & LET?S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH [1971])

DEATHDREAM is an angry movie. A film about the how the horrors of war can change a human being irrevocably, it uses its supernatural elements (in this case vampirism) as a metaphor, not just a tool for elementary scare tactics.?In many ways, DEATHDREAM?feels like it would be at home in the filmography of George Romero, an artist who was interested in creating similar allegories.

Bob Clark is mostly known for his holiday classic, A CHRISTMAS STORY,?and his raunchy teen comedy, PORKY?S. But before making those mainstream hits, he toiled away in indie horror. Starting with the zombie movie, CHILDREN SHOULDN?T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS?(which is an absolute snoozer), he cut his filmmaking teeth creating rubber faced ghouls and desperately horny teens. It wasn?t until DEATHDREAM?that he would add deeper dimensions of character and emotion, as it seems the story of young Andy?s homecoming from Vietnam is a very personal one for Clark.

The plot to DEATHDREAM?is relatively simplistic, and that straightforwardness allows the film to focus on the more interesting subtexts going on beneath the surface. Andy Brooks (an utterly chill inducing, dead eyed Richard Backus) is a young Vietnam soldier killed on the battlefield. While dying, he is suddenly transfixed by an ambiguous object. Back home, a soldier reports the tragic news to the Brooks family (which includes John Marley and Lynn Carlin, of John Cassavettes extraordinary FACES, as his father and mother). However, on a local highway, Andy reemerges as a silent hitchhiker. Much later that evening, hours after a tranquil Brooks family dinner, Andy returns home. The family is ecstatic, but Andy is despondent, much to his father?s chagrin. He stumbles through the motions of civilian life, but eventually the family?s happiness turns into curiosity and later fear for Andy?s condition. Something is definitely wrong with and Andy?s relationship with his father becomes increasingly strained as it becomes clear the boy may have been involved in two local murders (where the deaths ?fed? him in an unusual way).

Its obvious what Clark is getting at here. Like so many soldiers of that war, the ?old? Andy died on the battlefield and returned home a souless, empty shell of a human being. ?Clark and Ormsby take the transformation a bit futher, making Andy a very literal ?monster?, as the Vietnam War used him up, sucking every last of humanity the young boy had in him. The subtext adds a layer of sadness to Andy?s character and, even though he gives you creeps as he injects one of his victim?s blood straight into his veins (another obvious bit of Vietnam Vet imagery, as so many brought home drug habits), you can?t help but feel sorry for his plight. He served his country and, in turn, lost his soul.

Besides unveiling Clark?s directorial talents, DEATHDREAM?also served as a training ground for two other horror icons: Tom Savini and Alan Ormsby. Savini?s legendary talents speak for themselves, but it is worth noting he considers DEATHDREAM?an important rung on the ladder of his success. The DVD (from fellow exploitation icon Bill Lustig?s amazing label, Blue Underground) features a 10-minute featurette about Savini titled ?The Early Years? that has the young makeup artist saying just how much DEATHDREAM?meant to his career. Screenwriter Alan Ormsby wrote DEATHDREAM, and he later wrote CAT PEOPLE?for Paul Schrader and THE SUBSTITUTE?(yup, the one with Tom Berenger), in addition to frequently collaborating with Bob Clark. Ormsby also directed and wrote DERANGED?in 1974 (the same year?Deathdream?hit the States from its native Canada), a biopic about serial killer Ed Gein that again showcased Savini?s early makeup work.

There?s a lot to love about DEATHDREAM, but I can also see many people being turned off by its overtly grim tone. Unlike CHILDREN SHOULDN?T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS?and his follow up to DEATHDREAM, the holiday slasher classic (and pre-cursor to HALLOWEEN), BLACK CHRISTMAS, Clark would inject zero humor into the proceedings. But those looking for a dour, thoughtful piece of cinema with one hell of a downer ending will be thrilled beyond words. A true product of its times, DEATHDREAM?is a damn fine horror picture.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of LET?S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH, which?is the very definition of ?unremarkable?.

I first saw LET?S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH?at an Exhumed Films triple feature in 2005 (I believe the second and third movies were actually Bob Clark?s CHILDREN SHOULDN?T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS?and Lamberto Bava?s DEMONS).?A definite ?slow burn?, LET?S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH?is the low budget tale of our titular heroine, a recently released psych patient who moves with her cellist husband and hippie friend into a New England estate known simply as ?the old Bishop place?. Upon arriving, she attempts to ignore the whispering voice in her head and the ghostly apparitions surrounding the property.? Is Jessica going crazy? Or is the house really haunted by the spirits of its past?

I honestly can?t give you an answer either way, as the film?s attempts to shroud its narrative in ambiguity create too many unanswered questions. The locals tell tales of a girl drowning in the lake that surrounds the home, and that she now roams the countryside as a vampire. And an old family portrait shows the girl bearing quite a resemblance to the beatnik squatter Jessica finds living in their new house. But that can?t be right?can it? The resemblance has to be a conicidence. Or is it?

LET?S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH creates solid atmosphere with its misty photography and haunting score. The use of sound in the film is top notch as well, as long stretches of silence give way to jolting pianos and jarring jump scares, something I usually hate but found worked quite effectively here. I?d be interested to see if Tobe Hooper is a fan of this film, as the aural design would be replicated in the original TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, full of clangs and white noise. And much like that classic, the scares never feel cheap, but are used in an effort to build Jessica?s growing paranoia.

The performances are good, if a bit uneven at times, and the attention to character building over straight horror (a solid portion of the film is devoted to how Jessica?s mental disorder puts a strain on her marriage) is something you don?t see in most scare films anymore. Unfortunately, the lack of answers grows frustrating after a while and the film, while only running a scant 88 minutes, drags quite a bit.

A true encapsulation of the filmmaking style of the time, LET?S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH?feels like a great concept that never fully gels into a completely coherent film. With such a great title and premise, it?s a wonder Hollywood hasn?t snatched it up to remake (I know I sound like a broken record here). With a slightly more focused script, LET?S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH?could be a truly wonderful little horror movie.

Feature #18 ? 10/18/12 ? Two From the ?Master? of Horror: Wes Craven! (SHOCKER [1989] & NEW NIGHTMARE [1994])

Wes Craven?s nickname should be ?50/50?, because those are the odds that, whenever he makes a movie, it?ll be any good. While it?s considered a ?classic?, no one can say A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET?is completely flawless (the ending, when you think about it, makes completely no sense), and even Craven?s ?solid? movies, like LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT,?suffer from glaring flaws (God, those bumbling small town cops are horrible). To me, SCREAM?will always be his best film (just rewatched the first one on blu and it holds up like a motherfucker. The sequels?not so much?), and when you combine this fact with the absolute stinkers he?s made (DEADLY FRIEND, THE HILLS HAVE EYES II, CURSED, MUSIC OF THE FUCKING HEART), the guy comes off like an above average Tobe Hooper, not a John Carpenter or George Romero.

SHOCKER is a film that is usually lumped by most into the ?stinker? category. And, for the most part, that?s right. But only half right. In 2010, Craven directed the monument to incoherent filmmaking, MY SOULD TO TAKE. Watching that film unfold is how the last moments must be before you dehydrate and die in the middle of the desert. It?s hallucinatory, bizarre, and you just kind of want it to end already. In many ways, SHOCKER feels?like the a stepping stone to?that colossally entertaining piece of crap, as the last thirty minutes find Craven almost brazenly defying logic.

What sucks is that SHOCKER?actually starts off great because it?s, well?coherent. Following a very ELM STREET?feeling credits sequence (where a man is using a buck knife to splice television pieces together in a grimy lair), we meet Jonathan Parker (future FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS?mastermind?Peter Berg), a rising high school football star. He?s got a pretty girlfriend, a supportive coach, and a loving police detective foster-father (the always welcome Michael Murphy). Enter Horace Pinker (Mitch Pileggi or, as you and I know him, Skinner from THE X-FILES), notorious mass murderer of suburban families. He slaughters Jonathan?s mother and sister (which Jonathan somehow witnesses in a dream?before?it happens) and then Jonathan psychically leads his father and the rest of the police force to Pinker?s television repair shop. He, of course, eludes capture and murders Jonathan?s girlfriend.

Up until this point, everything pretty much follows an easily discernible bit of logic. The psychic dream stuff, you would assume, will be explained later (spolier: it isn?t) and there?s only been minor logic gaps (like?why would they just let Jonathan and his girlfriend hang out alone after Pinker has just slaughtered his relatives and then gotten a good look at Jonathan while escaping the TV shop?). But, overall, it?s thrilling, well paced, and chock full of that great atmosphere that made A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET?so enjoyable. In all honesty, there are so many similarities between this movie and the ELM STREET?films that I couldn?t help but wonder why Wes didn?t just rework the script to be another sequel.

Jonathan then (psychically, of course) leads the police to a murder in progress, where they apprehend Pinker. Time passes, Pinker is sentenced to death and, on the day of his execution, the guards find him worshiping at a self-made television altar (his last wish was to have a TV brought to his cell), where some kind of spirit comes out and electrocutes him. The guards are able to revive the maniac (not without Pinker snapping awake and attacking the poor saps), and then Pinker is promptly put to death via electric chair, but not before delivering a speech to Jonathan and his dad (they?re witnesses at the execution) that pretty much says ?Luke, I?m your real psycho killer daddy?.

The whole time I found myself thinking, ?OK?so I?m still with you Wes. And I?m entertained. So really, who gives a shit about logic?? I quickly regretted giving him, as my dad would say, ?enough rope to hang himself?.

Pinker comes back, but as conducted electricity. Also?he?s able to jump into other people?s bodies. It?s actually kinda cool at first (and nice to see where JASON GOES TO HELL?stole the idea from). But then Pinker possess everyone in a small park, one after another, and it kind of gets ridiculous.?I?m sorry, but the movie lost me from that point on. SHOCKER?kind of just drags from there (at almost two hours, this film is ENTIRELY too long), hurtling toward a climax that is so preposterous, so inexplicably batshit as to defy explanation. But I?m going to give it my best shot (HERE THERE BE SPOILERS):

At one point, Jonathan?s loving football coach (who should?ve been played by Carl Weathers) is possessed by Pinker?until the ghost of Jonathan?s girlfriend appears and tells him to ?will it out? (the ghost will later appear to guide Jonathan in his quest against Pinker, kind of like ?Grandpa?s Ghost? leads little Joshua in TROLL 2). It seems that Pinker feeds off of the ?life force? inside of each human, but if it?s strong enough, you can kick his ass to the curb. Needless to say, the coach fails and then Pinker makes him jam a knife through his own chest. Everyone?s sad, and Jonathan gets the football team to rally together to execute a plan that he?s (again, inexplicably) devised to trap Pinker in TV Land.

This is where it gets tricky. Jonathan somehow is able to wrestle Pinker INTO A TELEVISION, where they fight and tumble through classic TV shows (like Mary Tyler Moore), music videos (I think that was Alice Cooper) and recorded moments in history (like the H-Bomb tests?who the hell is watching this?). At midnight, his football buddies are supposed to cut the town?s main power tower off (using just an axe, apparently), trapping Pinker in TV Land forever. It?s a sequence so?stupid and strange, that you can?t help but grin ear to ear while watching it.

Oh?this should be a good time to clue you guys in: I loved every second of this nonsense. It?s so weird, so defiant in its stance against logic and reason that it almost becomes a piece of abstract art. Craven throws narrative to the dogs and just lets the crazy flow. It?s deliriously wonderful, and really has to be seen to believed.

Seek SHOCKER?out. It?s not ?boring bad? like CURSED, but instead is a great film to crack a beer and just kick back with. You?ll laugh. You?ll gasp. You?ll scream ?WTF?? more than once. But as the credits roll, I guarantee you?ll be entertained.?It?s up in the air as to which side of the ?50/50? coin this truly lands on, but I?d say it lands on the ?solid? side.

NEW NIGHTMARE felt like the obvious choice to follow SHOCKER with, as it almost explains why the film was so incoherent. Craven was obviously bored with the actual character of Freddy Kreuger. Relegated to a pop culture piece of iconography, the gloved killer had lost his ability to be scary long ago. After having very little to do with FREDDY?S DEAD (falsely subtitled THE FINAL NIGHTMARE), Craven didn?t actual ressurect the character, but instead let Freddy usher a new monster into ?the real world?. Deliciously meta in a way he?d go on to perfect in the SCREAM movies, NEW NIGHTMARE is, in my opinion, one of the more wrongly underloved films of all time.

NEW NIGHTMARE is very much a horror film within a horror film. The film follows actress Heather Langenkamp, director Wes Craven and the rest of the crew (both fictional and playing themselves, as is the case with New Line head honcho of the time, Bob Shaye) as they embark upon making another sequel in the ELM STREET franchise. But Wes is making the movie in order to stop evil from entering this world, as the first six films apparently helped usher in a demon that manifests itself in the form of Freddy.

Where SCREAM would be a commentary on horror films, NEW NIGHTMARE is really a commentary on fervor. Much like the Sutter Cane novels in John Carpenter?s IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS, these works of fiction are made real by the multitudes that take in and believe them. In many ways, I also wonder if Craven is relaying to us, via fiction, some of his disdain for both fans of the franchise and the franchise itself. The demons return to earth because, not only do people not believe in them anymore, they?re also angered by the death of their fictional manifestion on the big screen. They want more Freddy because, without him, the people don?t get their fill of ?pure evil?. ?The only way to stop Freddy is to make another movie,? Craven says at one point, making it literally clear that he wanted to stop the ELM STREET movies and their clamoring fans in their tracks.

Craven also seems interested in the effects making these movies has on its stars and creators. Heather has trouble sleeping and almost fears the sight of her movie when her young son has it on the television. When Craven is said to be writing the ?new script?, his nightmares keep him awake night after night, to the point that Langenkamp is concerned and instantly knows the background of the director?s seemingly legendary dreams.???Nothing good comes from these,? Craven seems to be saying and even Robert Englund is haunted by visions of his evil alter ego.

None of this would matter if the film didn?t work, and it really does. Craven?s shot composition, while rather workmanlike as it always is, is lit to moody perfection at times. And the look of ?new Freddy? is kind of terrifying, as the cartoon, rubbery visage that became his trademark is replaced with an angular, demonic face. Also gone are the ?witty? one liners and jokey, tongue-in-cheek nature of Freddy?s attacks. NEW NIGHTMARE is deadly serious, and all the better for it, as its the first movie since the original that is actually, you know?scary.

If Craven?s intention was to throw fans off and kill the franchise, he succeeded. While the film made $18 million at the BO (over double its budget), it was the lowest grossing, and final entry in the series (unless you count FREDDY VS. JASON). It?s just as well, as this is the best way to take out an icon. By reinventing him almost completely and putting an entirely new spin on the series, Craven made his greatest creation scary again. And that?s really all we want from our horror right? To thrill and chill and make us question why we ever liked these movies (or want to make them) in the first place.
