Road to language learning is iconic

ScienceDaily (Nov. 13, 2012) ? Languages are highly complex systems and yet most children seem to acquire language easily, even in the absence of formal instruction. New research on young children's use of British Sign Language (BSL) sheds light on one mechanism -- iconicity -- that may play an important role in children's ability to learn language.

For spoken and written language, the arbitrary relationship between a word's form -- how it sounds or how it looks on paper -- and its meaning is a particularly challenging feature of language acquisition. But one of the first things people notice about sign languages is that signs often represent aspects of meaning in their form. For example, in BSL the sign EAT involves bringing the hand to the mouth just as you would if you were bringing food to the mouth to eat it.

In fact, a high proportion of signs across the world's sign languages are similarly iconic, connecting human experience to linguistic form.

Robin Thompson and colleagues David Vison, Bencie Woll, and Gabriella Vigliocco at the Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL) at University College London in the United Kingdom wanted to examine whether this kind of iconicity might provide a key to understanding how children come to link words to their meaning.

Their findings are published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

The researchers looked at data from 31 deaf children who were being raised in deaf BSL signing families in the United Kingdom. Parents indicated the number of words understood and produced by their children between the ages of 8 and 30 months. The researchers decided to focus on 89 specific signs, examining children's familiarity with the signs as well as the iconicity and complexity of the signs.

The findings reveal that younger (11-20 months) and older (21-30 months) children comprehended and produced more BSL signs that were iconic than those that were less iconic. And the benefit of iconicity seemed to be greater for the older children. Importantly, this relationship did not seem to depend on how familiar, complex or concrete the words were.

Together, these findings suggest that iconicity could play an important role in language acquisition.

Thompson and colleagues hypothesize that iconic links between our perceptual-motor experience of the world and the form of a sign may provide an imitation-based mechanism that supports early sign acquisition. These iconic links highlight motor and perceptual similarity between actions and signs such as DRINK, which is produced by tipping a curved hand to the mouth and represents the action of holding a cup and drinking from it.

The researchers emphasize that these results can also be applied to spoken languages, in which gestures, tone of voice, inflection, and face-to-face communication can help make the link between words and their meanings less arbitrary.

"We suggest that iconicity provides scaffolding -- a middle-ground -- to bridge the "great divide" between linguistic form and bodily experience for both sign language and spoken language learners," says Thompson.

FDA seeks more authority amid meningitis outbreak

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The head of the Food and Drug Administration asked Congress Wednesday for more authority to police pharmacies like the one that triggered a deadly meningitis outbreak, even as lawmakers questioned why the agency didn't do more with its existing powers.

FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg called for new laws to clarify her agency's authority to crack down on companies like the New England Compounding Center, which distributed contaminated pain injections that have sickened more than 460 Americans and caused 32 deaths.

Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee spent most of the first hearing on the outbreak questioning state and federal regulators about why they didn't act sooner against the company.

A timeline assembled by the committee's Republican staff showed that the FDA and the Massachusetts board of pharmacy investigated the pharmacy more than a dozen times in the past decade. In particular, lawmakers pointed to a 2002 FDA inspection that found contamination issues with the same steroid implicated in the latest recall.

"I was stunned and angered to learn that an inspection of the NECC by the FDA and the Massachusetts board of pharmacy over 10 years ago identified contamination in the very same drug at issue in the current outbreak," said Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., who chairs the committee.

Hamburg told lawmakers that the problems uncovered in inspections were "very serious," but that the agency was obligated to defer to Massachusetts authorities, who have more direct oversight over pharmacies.

Hamburg emphasized repeatedly the difficulty of taking action against compounding pharmacies, which have long operated in a legal gray area between state and federal law.

"The challenge we have today is that there is a patchwork of legal authorities that oversee the regulatory actions we can take," said Hamburg, who was nominated to head the FDA by President Obama in 2009.

Compounding pharmacies traditionally fill special orders placed by doctors for individual patients, turning out a small number of customized formulas each week. They are typically overseen by state pharmacy boards.

In the last two decades some compounders, like the NECC, have grown into large businesses that ship thousands of doses of drugs to multiple states. Hamburg said that when her agency tries to intervene in those cases they face a "crazy quilt," of court rulings, which are split on whether the federal government has authority over pharmacies.

Republicans pressed Hamburg to answer simple "yes or no" questions about the agency's stance, to which she countered with lengthy, nuanced explanations. Lawmakers repeatedly accused the commissioner of evading their questions.

"You're the grand poobah of the FDA and I'm asking you, 'could you have prevented this tragedy?' and you're saying you couldn't have because you don't have jurisdiction," said Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., in one particularly heated exchange.

"No, I'm saying it's very hard to know if any one action we might have taken would have stopped this terrible tragedy," Hamburg said.

Even some Democrats, who normally side with Obama administration officials at such hearings, seemed to lose their patience.

"We have to figure out how to give you the jurisdiction to do what you need to do ... and these inconclusive answers are not helping us," said Rep. Diana DeGette, D- Colo.

In prepared testimony, Hamburg suggested putting in place a two-tier system in which traditional compounding pharmacies continue to be regulated at the state level, but larger pharmacies would be subject to FDA oversight. Hamburg said regulators would have to consider multiple factors, including how much interstate business a pharmacy does, to identify non-traditional compounders.

These non-traditional pharmacies would have to register with the FDA and undergo regular inspections, similar to pharmaceutical manufacturers. Large compounding pharmacies would also have to meet the more stringent manufacturing standards required of pharmaceutical companies.

Earlier in the hearing, the owner and director of the NECC declined to testify, invoking his Fifth Amendment right to not answer questions in order to avoid self-incrimination.

Despite his silence, lawmakers repeatedly pressed Barry Cadden to account for the problems that led to the outbreak.

"Mr. Cadden, what explanation can you give the families who have lost their loved ones, and those who are gravely ill, for the actions of your company?" asked Stearns, who heads the subcommittee on oversight and investigations.

Flanked by two lawyers, Cadden told lawmakers, "Under advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer under basis of my constitutional rights and privileges, including the Fifth Amendment."

Federal officials have opened a criminal investigation of Cadden and the NECC.

The Framingham, Mass.-based pharmacy has been closed since early last month, and Massachusetts officials have taken steps to permanently revoke its license.

Inspections last month found a host of potential contaminants at NECC's facility, including standing water, mold and water droplets. Compounded drugs are supposed to be prepared in temperature-controlled clean rooms to maintain sterility.

Cadden appeared immediately after the widow of a longtime Kentucky judge, who died of fungal meningitis after receiving multiple doses of NECC's steroid injection. Fungal meningitis causes inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord.

Speaking without notes, Joyce Lovelace told lawmakers of more than 50 years of marriage to 78-year-old Eddie Lovelace, who was a circuit judge before his death on Sept. 17 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

"My family is bitter, we are angry, we are heartbroken and devastated. I come here begging you to do something about the matter," Lovelace said.

Health officials say as many as 14,000 people received the methylprednisolone acetate steroid shots, mostly for back pain. The Centers for Disease Control later showed that at least two lots of the injections distributed to 23 states were contaminated with fungus. The outbreak was first discovered in September, though CDC officials say the earliest deaths connected to the outbreak date back to July.

Let The App Creation Era Begin: Yapp Events App Builder Launches Out Of Beta

photo (3)Remember the time when web sites were reserved for businesses, or niche designers? Before the days of Tumblr and Wordpress and even MySpace (where I learned my first bit of basic code). Now anyone can easily build a website, to the degree where startups have crazy names like Yipit and Maluuba just to snatch up a domain. But times are shifting. We're heading into an era of app creation, rather than mainly app consumption, and Yapp's public launch of its app event creator is just the beginning. The product has been in beta for the past 6 months, with over 73 percent of those invited activating their beta code, 55 percent of whom were able to successfully publish an app.

On Nov. 13, 2012, the sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, peaking at 9:04 p.m. EST.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where Global Positioning System (GPS) and communications signals travel. This disrupts the radio signals for as long as the flare is ongoing, anywhere from minutes to hours.

This flare is classified as an M6 flare. M-class flares are the weakest flares that can still cause some space weather effects near Earth. They can cause brief radio blackouts at the poles. This M-class flare caused a radio blackout categorized according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's Space Weather Scales as R2 -- or "moderate" -- on a scale of R1 to R5. It has since subsided.

By observing the sun in a number of different wavelengths, NASA's telescopes can tease out different aspects of events on the sun.

Three images of a solar flare on Nov. 13, 2012, captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), showed light in the 304 ngstrom wavelength, which shows light from the region of the sun's atmosphere where flares originate; light from the sun in the 193 ngstrom wavelength, which shows the hotter material of a solar flare; and light in 335 ngstroms, which highlights light from active regions in the corona.

Increased numbers of flares are quite common at the moment, since the sun's normal 11-year activity cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum, which is expected in 2013. Humans have tracked this solar cycle continuously since it was discovered in 1843, and it is normal for there to be many flares a day during the sun's peak activity.

The flare was not associated with a coronal mass ejection (CME), another solar phenomenon that can send solar particles into space and can reach Earth one to three days later.

The McGill Daily ? Locked up

Imagine locking yourself in your bathroom, staying there 23 hours a day, with little to no human contact. Nothing but the sound of your own heartbeat, the workings of your imagination, and perhaps some entertainment ? a few books to pass the time, perhaps some photos to look at during the interminable hours.

This is a reality faced by thousands across North America, sometimes for years, or even decades at a time. While the numbers are notoriously difficult to determine precisely, in the U.S. approximately 80,000 prisoners are put in solitary confinement each year. In Canada, that number is around 7,600. It?s an inhumane practice that is overused and unreasonably allocated. In the States, solitary is often prescribed via an internal hearing, with the verdict decided by a minimal number of prison bureaucrats, without a lawyer present. It can be prescribed for the most arbitrary of offenses. Prisoners in possession of writings by Malcolm X, anything on prisoners? rights, or even Machiavelli?s The Prince have been thrown into solitary under pretense of ?gang membership? supposedly proven by possession of these innocuous items. Once in, a prisoner can remain there for years.

Solitary ? so clearly meant to break a person, rather than rehabilitate ? is endemic in our prisons. The Unied Nations Special Rapporteur on torture wants it banned. And yet, as with most prison issues, change lingers far in the distance, and public attention remains insignificant.

By ignoring the legions of prisoners in solitary, and, on a larger scale, the huge number of men and women that enter into prison every year, we do ourselves a great disservice. By ignoring the abuse and blatant mistreatment of some of the most marginalized people in our society, we participate in the creation of a dangerous power dynamic, one that takes punishment beyond ethical limits.

But why is this? How can we so blissfully ignore such a huge swath of people and the abuse of their rights? Why is this okay, on any level?

Some of the most flagrant systemic abuses happen within our prisons, and we don?t particularly care. When I talk about the punishment of prisoners, a common refrain I hear goes something like this: ?Well, they committed a crime, and they deserve to be punished.? It is, in my personal experience, the most widespread perception about prisoners. We see them as bad people, those who deserve to be punished. And yet, it also serves to note that this is somewhat of a knee-jerk reaction: crime and punishment are so closely wedded in our minds that to even question the assumptions that link them is unthinkable.

Part of the reason for this can be found in the constant images of prisons, crime, and criminals that we are subjected to. Be it crime novels, prison shows, detective shows, movies involving gangs, the mafia, or murderers, expos?s, and documentaries, and so on, we are used to seeing crime all over the media. Prison films even constitute their own genre. These images and narratives of prison, and, by extension criminals that occupy them, completely normalize the idea of the prison as the place we must send our ?evildoers? to.

Aside from fictional narratives of crime and prisons, the media itself also devotes a great deal of time to crime coverage. According to Mother Jones and The Center for Media and Public Affairs in Washington, D.C., during the 1990s crime was the number-one element of coverage on nightly news: while homicide rates dropped by half over a period of eight years, homicide stories on the three major networks rose three-fold. Surrounded by such exploitative images, it is no wonder that the public feels it needs to be protected, and support tough-on-crime measures no matter the ethical, financial, and social costs to society.

Only once we begin to question our underlying assumptions about the prison system can we begin to have a real discussion about inhumane prison practices like solitary confinement. If we continue to support ideas dictating that the only thing criminals are worthy of is punishment, then marginal reforms might be possible, but are more likely to fall short of anything meaningful. We must question the power dynamics that underlie our prison system, for if we automatically assume that all crime is worthy of harsh punishment, then we allow room for those in power to abuse ? with our consent. Remember that a society will always be judged based upon how it treats its weakest members. Prisoners are no exception.

Yemen tribal leader held under house arrest over al Qaeda ties

ADEN (Reuters) - A tribal leader suspected of links to al Qaeda was put under house arrest on Saturday in the southern city of Aden after security forces warned him a week ago to hand himself over to the authorities, an official said.

Yemen has stepped up a campaign to defeat Islamist militants this year. It is an arena for U.S. drone strikes because al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has used its Yemen base to target Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Tarek al-Fadli, who was raised in Saudi Arabia and fought in Afghanistan, heads a major tribe in Abyan province.

He disappeared several months ago when the Yemeni army, backed by U.S. drones, fought to clear al Qaeda militants from southern Yemeni towns they had occupied during an uprising last year against veteran ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Fadli reappeared last week in his home in the port city of Zinjibar, one of the towns the army took back from al Qaeda, leading to a stand-off between his supporters and troops.

On Tuesday, he was given an ultimatum to surrender as the government sought to avoid a clash with the tribal leader. Fadli agreed on Saturday to move to the southern capital of Aden where he was placed under house arrest.

"We managed to move Fadli out of his home in Abyan and now he's under house arrest in Aden," said an official from Abyan.

"Now Fadli will remain under house arrest until the people of Abyan present evidence that would lead to his trial."

The stand-off, which lasted nearly a week, highlighted the challenges facing President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi - who took power after Saleh stepped down in February - in trying to assert state authority following the uprising.

Impoverished Yemen adjoins the world's top oil exporter, Saudi Arabia. Its wealthier Gulf neighbors and Washington are concerned al Qaeda and other Islamist fighters could pose a threat to Saudi Arabia and nearby oil shipping channels.

?Poetry at Tech? features acclaimed guests - Technique

By Vance Berry | Friday, November 9, 2012

Throughout the year, the liberal arts program Poetry at Tech brings renowned guests to the Institute to present their compositions to the campus community.? The ?Adam Stephens Night Out for Poetry? that took place Thursday was the second of the semester?s events, and invited acclaimed poets Bob Hicok and Jamaal May to present selections of their works.

The Technique sat down with Poetry at Tech?s Associate Director Travis Denton to discuss the importance of poetry and the arts on campus along with ways to get involved, and spoke with featured poet May to discuss his style and inspirations.

For Denton, poetry and other artistic outlets for expression can be a crucial balance against the purely academic rigor at Tech.

?The presence of the arts on campus is vital, and the students need the creative outlet.? I think students should take full advantage of the arts at here?because academics are important, but you feed your spirit with art,? Denton said.

While Poetry at Tech readings and events may represent a reprieve from academics for some, Denton explains that the program supplements its poetry readings and springtime community workshops with academic classes, such as the intensive poetry reading courses ?Poetry and Poetics I,? and ?Poetry and Poetics II,? which are workshop-style classes in which students are given the opportunity to explore each other?s work.

?Students learn to generate poems, learn about poetic? forms, and how to present their work,? Denton said.

Poetry at Tech?s reading series, Denton explains, has built its reputation as one of the premier reading series in the southeast by featuring works from poets who are vibrant in their use of language,? present their work well and are likely to be captivating to an audience.

However, Denton also notes that Poetry at Tech seeks additional complementary qualities when pairing poets for any given reading.

?We like to pair senior poets who have been honing their craft for years. They?re the ones that we look up to.?At the same time, we like to pair our senior poets with emerging poets that are just getting their feet in the door, that may have their first book coming out, or maybe don?t even have a book out just yet,? Denton said.

Notably, May has recently been receiving recognition for the powerful, compelling quality of his work.

?The ?Adam Stephens Night Out for Poetry? featured a wonderful pairing of poets. Representing the emerging poets, in this corner we have Jamaal May, who is a poet out of Detroit,? Denton said. ?Jamaal has been getting a lot of attention in the poetry community because he combines being a page poet and a slam poet, he has that kind of energy that?s just inspiring, and he?s able to pull both of them off and do it well. He also won the Beatrice Hawley Award for poetry this year, which is a great accomplishment.?

When describing his personal reasons for composing poetry, May? said that he feels more compelled to write than having been inspired to do so. Those aspects of his life are varied, and he believes these motivations differ across poets.

?I think what typically makes a poet?s work distinct isn?t always a particular thing they do that stands out. Often what makes a? poet?s work unique is the way they mix the available hodgepodge of words, techniques, goals, forms, sounds, images and rhetorical devices into their own blend of ideas,? May said.

May works themes into his compositions that call into question the nature of humanity.

?Lately, I?ve been compelled by the [connections] between things that appear to be at odds. I?ve been interested, for example, in displays of strength that require vulnerability, desire?s relationship to fear, and demonstrating the need for human connection by showing isolation,? May said.

From the mundane to the extraordinary, May?s sources of inspiration come from far and wide and give him a broad range of subject matter to compose on.

?I am compelled by the usual go-tos like music, film and poetry, but even more so by all of ways that the world surprises me. I?m compelled by individual words, images and events, and also by love, by inequality, by metal, woodgrain, comedy, overheard arguments?the largesse of this bizarre world,? May said.

For Thursday?s event, May was paired with one of his favorite poets Bob Hicok, who teaches at Virginia Tech.

?[Hicok?s] poems have such a rich wit around them, such a lively humor, that an audience can?t help but be entertained by his work,? Denton said.

Associated with the School of Literature, Media and Communication and Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, Poetry at Tech was founded when Henry C. Bourne created the Bourne Chair in Poetry at Tech. The Chair is held by nationally-acclaimed poet Thomas Lux.? In the Spring of 2013 the H. Bruce McEver Visiting Chair in Writing will be held by both Travis Denton and Ginger Murchison.

Lux is scheduled to teach a poetry workshop with Denton later in the semester, with the date and time to be announced. Applications should be requested by Saturday, Nov. 10.

Denton encourages students to get involved with Poetry at Tech?s reading events and spring community workshops.

?I can think of at least four to five right now off the top of my head who have come to our community workshops consistently and have said to me ?I want to get a master of fine arts in creative writing and poetry? because of this workshop and these programs.? We?re really happy about that,? Denton said.

Lakers fire coach Mike Brown after dismal start

After losing four of five games to start the season, the Los Angeles Lakers fired coach Mike Brown on Friday.

The Lakers fired Mike Brown after 71 regular-season games. (Getty)The Lakers fired Mike Brown after 71 regular season games. (Getty)

Brown's agent, Warren LeGarie confirmed the firing, saying Brown had informed him of his dismissal. Assistant coach Bernie Bickerstaff will serve as interim coach while the Lakers search for a long-term replacement.

The Lakers will cease running the Princeton offense immediately, sources told Yahoo! Sports. Management was unhappy with the offense implemented this season, and Bickerstaff was told that he needed to move away from it. Some elements could still be used on Friday night but the team plans to install more traditional pick-and-roll NBA sets moving forward.

It is unclear whether the organization will make a run at bringing back Phil Jackson, but one candidate prominently being discussed as a long-term possibility: Mike D'Antoni.

D'Antoni has been without a job since leaving the New York Knicks in 2011. D'Antoni had knee replacement surgery in the past couple weeks and is not yet on his feet. Would still need time to rehabilitate before he could go back to work.

[Video: Carmelo Anthony, Knicks off to hot start]

Indiana Pacers assistant Brian Shaw also could become a candidate ? though that's a dicier proposition, given the acrimony that ensued between the Lakers front office and Shaw after the team chose to replace Jackson with Brown over Shaw.

USA Today first reported Brown's firing.

In conversations on Thursday, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak made a case to Lakers owner Jerry Buss and executive vice president Jim Buss to give Brown more time before deciding to fire him, sources told Y! Sports. Brown also made a case to management that he could get the Lakers into championship contention, sources said.

[Also: Most expensive NBA tickets for 2012-13 season]

Lakers ownership made clear that buying out the remaining three years on Brown's original $18 million, four-year contract wasn't an obstacle to making a coaching change.

Within the organization, there was a sense that Brown has frayed his connection to the locker room with long practices and game-day shootarounds, sources said. Brown began to address that issue recently with shortened sessions.

The irony is that Jerry Buss' son who runs the day-to-day operations of the franchise, Jim ? and not Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak ? was the primary advocate in the hiring of Brown and the firing of him. Kupchak was partial to Rick Adelman as a replacement, sources said. Nevertheless, the Buss family lost patience with the team's sluggish start to the Princeton offense, and didn't accept the excuses of a weak bench with such a star-studded starting five of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard and Steve Nash.

Nash is sitting out with a broken bone in his leg, and won't return to the lineup until later this month.

Yahoo! Sports' NBA reporter Marc J. Spears contributed to this story.

alomj: Self Improvement | Self-Empowerment Through Music: The ...

By Ken Howard -

If you?re like me, you can?t go to the gym without your music. I derive inspiration, energy, and stamina from my personal selections of playlists to energize my entire fitness routine. At home, I will put on music when I have to do some mindless but nevertheless necessary chore. And when I?m feeling not-so-great, physically or emotionally, music ?hath charms to calm the savage beast?, as the saying goes.

In my work as a psychotherapist and life/business coach, frequently I am encouraging clients to identify the behaviors that are their options for solving problems. It takes focus and energy. While I am not a ?music therapist? per se, I do believe that using the power of music can energize your motivation, inner strength, and self-esteem.

As a big fan of many (not all) Broadway musicals, I derive inspiration from many of these songs. Others might derive inspiration from other genres, including country/western, hip-hop, or pop. I encourage you to give this technique a try, to use your iPhone, iPod, or other portable music device to develop an ?Inspiration Playlist? to use when you need an emotional boost. Here are some songs to consider, and why:

?Defying Gravity? (from the original Broadway cast recording of ?Wicked?, sung by Idina Menzel) ? This is a great song to re-energize after someone has betrayed, undermined, or under-estimated you.

?Listen? (from the movie soundtrack version of ?Dreamgirls?, sung by Beyonce?) ? This song is about confronting someone who has tried to dominate and undermine you, and regaining your power back to run your own life. It?s a great song for recovering from a breakup, or healing from abuse.

?I Am Changing? (from both stage and movie versions of ?Dreamgirls?) ? This one is about a time of transition; forgiving yourself from the regrets of your past, and learning that your future is not doomed because of past mistakes.

?The Writing on the Wall? (from ?The Mystery of Edwin Drood?, original Broadway cast album, sung by Betty Buckley) ? This is an existential pick-me-up about the value of living each to its fullest.

?If My Friends Could See Me Now? (from the stage and movie version of ?Sweet Charity?) ? This song of pride, triumph, and just a little gloating helps to affirm yourself in new accomplishments, achieving new heights, or just preparing yourself to do so.

?One Hallowe?en? (from the Broadway musical ?Applause?, sung by Penny Fuller) ? This 60?s-sounding anthem of unbridled (and ruthless!) ambition is for when you need to tap into your competitive side and frankly let them have it with all you got, no matter what. (In context, this is sung by the ambitious understudy, ?Eve?, challenging the Broadway star, ?Margo?, in this musical adaptation of the classic film, ?All About Eve.?)

?Red Light? (from the original movie soundtrack of ?Fame? (1980), sung by Linda Clifford) ? This ?don?t-mess-with-me? song, sung with attitude by an African-American female, is a song about handling a situation assertively when others undermine a relationship. It?s also about setting limits, not being a victim, and telling people where to get off, when it?s time to.

?My Own Space? (from the Broadway musical, ?The Act? cast album, sung by Liza Minnelli) ? This beautiful solo-piano song is about how to stay in relationship without losing yourself in the process. It?s about how you can love someone else without depleting yourself.

?Don?t Rain on My Parade? (from the stage and film versions of ?Funny Girl?, sung by Barbra Streisand) ? This in-your-face tour-de-force is the ultimate song of determination, bravura, and optimism, great for energizing yourself in preparation for meeting a challenge (job interview, relationship, sports event, creative audition, etc.)

?Let The River Run? (from the soundtrack of ?Working Girl?, written and sung by Carly Simon) ? This driving, energizing song is an ode to optimism and idealism, and unleashing the force that is you.

?It?s My Turn? (from the soundtrack of ?It?s My Turn?, sung by Diana Ross) ? This gentle ballad of self-affirmation is the song that inspired me when I was 20 to come out of the closet. It?s about recognizing a right to your own happiness, even if others don?t support you. Perfect for people just coming out, leaving to take a new job, moving to a new city, or making any kind of positive transition in life.

?Make Your Own Kinda Music? (sung by Cass ?Mama Cass? Elliot) ? This anthem of 60?s sensibility affirms you when no one else seems to, or when others? jealousy tries to tear you down.

?I Am Woman? (pop song from the 70?s, embodiment of the women?s movement, sung by Helen Reddy) ? Even for a guy, this song can energize. It?s about challenging the limiting, oppressive, selfish attitudes of others and breaking free; part of being a movement of people who will no longer be victimized or oppressed, in an uplifting anthem of self-empowerment, individually and collectively. It also evokes the 70?s values of progressivism, boldness, and strength in numbers. We could all be reminded of these political and social values of a bygone era that could use a revival of hearts and minds.

?Better Get to Livin?? (pop song from only a few years ago, written and sung by Dolly Parton) ? This song got its own whole article from me several years ago. Its message is about confronting your own inertia, challenging your own negative thinking, and embracing a new sense of self-empowerment to improve your life, done with country-gospel style by the inimitable ?Backwoods Barbie? herself, Dolly Parton.

?F-k You? (pop sung written by Bruno Mars and sung by Cee Lo Green) ? This aggressive anthem of powerful confrontation (remade as the less-effective ?Forget You?, for radio) is the ultimate expression of anger about injustice, about a man who is dumped by a girl for not having ?enough? money, but it fits for anytime you?ve been wronged by someone else for stupid reasons.

?I Am What I Am? (from the Broadway musical, original or revival, of ?La Cage Aux Folles?, with the original sung by the Tony-winning George Hearn, closing the first act of the show in full drag) ? This anthem of empowerment for the gay community was an instant classic in 1983, a song of strong defiance against those who would oppress another, individually or collectively. Its existential message that your life is what you make of it holds true today, and is the ultimate energizer for someone looking to find their inner core of strength and dignity.

Try downloading some of these off of iTunes or another digital music carrier, and play them at the gym, during your commute, on a run, or anytime you want to harness the power of music to energize and inspire your dreams and goals.

Music therapy can be a part of building your self-confidence and healing from being ?beaten down? by life. It can be a part of an overall counseling and coaching plan.

Nigeria bond yields tumble after S&P rating upgrade

LAGOS (Reuters) - Yields on Nigeria's 10-year bond were down 38 basis points at the opening of trade on Thursday from their level before Standard & Poor's lifted the country's credit rating on Wednesday.

The 10-year note, which was trading at 13.98 percent before the ratings announcement, opened for trade on Thursday at 13.60 percent, while yields on other maturities have fallen between 10-20 basis points.

The fall in yields was also helped by Barclays' announcement this week that it will add Nigeria to its emerging market local currency government bond index from March next year, aiding a drop in yields, traders said.

The 3-year and 7-year notes have shed 12 basis points since the ratings announcement to trade at 12.38 percent and 12.42 percent respectively.

"Yields will continue to fall given the effects of the S&P ratings, Barclays and JP Morgan bond index inclusions and positive economic indicators, making local and foreign investors comfortable with Nigeria risk assets," a Lagos-based dealer at Standard Chartered Bank, told Reuters.

On Wednesday, global ratings agency S&P raised Nigeria's long-term foreign and local currency credit rating to BB-, three notches below investment grade, from B+, citing higher foreign exchange reserves and government reform efforts.

Barclays said in a report on Monday that 11 of Nigeria's government bonds had a market value of $13.9 billion, higher than its minimum requirement of $5 billion in eligible debt outstanding to qualify for index inclusion.

It said Nigeria will make up 0.5 percent of the index.

Nigeria's 10- and 20- year bond yields shed 300 basis points in a month in October as markets prepared for its inclusion in JP Morgan's emerging markets index, meant to attract inflows of up to $1 billion into the debt market.

ECB unlikely to do more for stagnant eurozone

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? The European Central Bank is not expected to offer further help to the 17-countries that use the euro when it holds its monthly rate-setting meeting on Thursday ? even though their economy desperately needs a lift.

Analysts say the bank will leave its key interest rate unchanged at a record low 0.75 percent, and stick to its position that it has done all that it needs to ? and now it's up to governments to get things moving by fixing their shaky finances and cutting the bureaucracy and regulations that block stronger growth.

The eurozone definitely could use a push. The economy shrank 0.3 percent in the second quarter, and the European Union's executive commission predicts it will shrink 0.4 percent this year, and, perhaps more alarmingly, barely grow at 0.1 percent next year. That means downturns and high unemployment into 2014 at least.

Five eurozone countries are in recession ? Italy, Spain Portugal, Greece and Cyprus.

The central bank has already used its chief stimulus tool ? lowering interest rates ? about as much as it can. The benchmark refinancing rate is at a record low, and money market rates are in some cases near zero. The refinancing rate is charged on loans from the ECB to private-sector banks, and through them influences a whole host of other short-term rates throughout the economy.

The bank has also made ?1 trillion ($1.27 trillion) in low-interest loans for up to three years to banks, reducing the threat of bank failures that would further shake up the fragile economy.

Crucially, in September the ECB said it was willing to buy bonds issued by indebted countries, if those countries agree to lower their deficits. Such purchases would lower their borrowing costs, and the mere proposal has sent bond market borrowing costs plummeting.

All that helped ward off complete collapse, but now analysts and ECB officials themselves, including bank President Mario Draghi, have questioned how much a further cut in the refinancing rate would help.

In theory, a cut stimulates the economy by making it easier for consumers and businesses to borrow, spend and invest. Yet cheap rates and cheap loans to banks are not getting through to the wider economy in the form of loans. That's because businesses see no reason to borrow and expand production in a slack economy.

The "fear and loathing" reflecting worries the eurozone might break up have eased, said Richard Barwell, senior European economist at the Royal Bank of Scotland. Draghi can now express "prudent optimism" about the future, he said, and basically "the message will remain the same: it's now down to the politicians, the ECB has done all it can."

The ECB has argued that it's up to countries to push ahead with so-called structural reforms ? ones that make their economy more productive in the long term. Those typically include breaking down job protections for established workers so that companies can hire and fire more easily, and be more willing to higher younger workers. Spain and Greece have jobless rates of 54.2 percent and 55.6 percent respectively for people under 25.

Sellafield waste 'posing risk'

An "intolerable risk" is being posed by hazardous waste stored in run-down buildings at Sellafield nuclear plant, a watchdog has found.

The National Audit Office (NAO) also said that for 50 years, the operators of the Cumbria installation failed to develop a long-term plan for waste.

Costs of plant-decommissioning has also spiralled out of control, it said.

Operator Sellafield Ltd, said it welcomed the report's findings and was "making improvements".

The plant is the UK's largest and most hazardous nuclear site, storing enough high and intermediate level radioactive waste to fill 27 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The NAO report states however, that owners of the station do not know how long it will take to build storage and treatment centres for the hazardous material or how much the final bill for decommissioning the plant is likely to be.

'Ripe for dithering'

It also concluded that over the five decades it was open, operators failed to plan how to dispose of the radioactive waste and some of the older facilities have "deteriorated so much that their contents pose significant risks to people and the environment".

What is radioactive waste?

  • Material containing levels of radioactivity hazardous to humans and the environment
  • Usually a by-product of nuclear power generation - 95% of UK's radioactive waste comes from the nuclear power industry
  • Waste is categorised by its radioactivity level - high (heat-generating), intermediate and low
  • High level waste (HLW) is the liquid by-product of reprocessing highly-radioactive spent nuclear fuel
  • HLW is converted into glass blocks within steel containers, then placed in a store where it is cooled by air - for at least 50 years

Source: Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC)

A long-term plan to clean up the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority-owned site, was agreed last year after an earlier one stalled because it was "unrealistic".

Margaret Hodge, who chairs the public accounts committee, said: "Projects of this length and ambition are ripe for dithering and delay.

"I am dismayed to discover the clean-up of Sellafield is no different. The authority's revised plan sees critical milestones shunted back by up to seven years.

"Hazardous radioactive waste is housed in buildings which pose 'intolerable risks to people and the environment'.

"My concern is that unless the authority holds Sellafield Ltd to a clear and rigorously benchmarked plan, timetables will continue to slip and costs spiral."

'Historic neglect'

The NAO report concluded that progress in 12 of the 14 major buildings and equipment projects considered "critical" for reducing risk, which range in cost from ?21m to ?1.3bn, also failed to achieve what they were supposed to and had not provided good value for money.

Dr Ruth Balogh, of West Cumbria and North Lakes Friends of the Earth, said: "The UK's failure to deal with highly hazardous nuclear waste at Sellafield is a national scandal that poses a significant risk to local people and the environment.

"The government has completely ignored the urgent need for interim measures to deal with this radioactive waste.

"We shouldn't build any new nuclear reactors if we can't deal with the radioactive mess that's already been created."

Around 240 of Sellafield's 1,400 buildings are nuclear facilities and so far 55 buildings on the site have been decommissioned.

Amyas Morse, head of the National Audit Office, added: "Owing to historic neglect, the authority faces a considerable challenge in taking forward decommissioning at Sellafield.

"It is good that the authority now has a more robust lifetime plan in place but it cannot say with certainty how long it will take to deal with hazardous radioactive waste or how much it will cost."
