    California Reconsiders Digital License Plates

In 2010, California considered switching to digital license plates,?complete with pop-up ads -- and the state is looking into similar legislation yet again.

Through Senate Bill 806, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)?can, at no cost to the state, create a three-year pilot program with as many as 160,000 cars testing digital plates --?essentially a 12-inch-by-6-inch computer screen with "California" in red across the top and license numbers in blue, the Sacramento Bee reported.

California hopes the technology,?patented by San Francisco-based Smart Plate Mobile, ?will not only improve efficiencies in vehicle registrations, but also save the DMV some of the $20 million it spends each year on postage for renewals.

The program, run by the DMV, would test the digital plates on California roadways. And? according to? Jim Lites, a lobbyist hired by Smart Plate Mobile, the pilot? would likely focus on vehicle fleets owned by large private companies --? ?companies that often spend much time managing the various registration renewals of fleet vehicles to ensure they're up to date, the Bee reported..

Unlike the 2010 legislation, seen as a potential revenue generator since the DMV could have sold ad space on the plates, ads are not included in the current bill -- which? will focus on vehicle registration efficiencies that can be created, Lites said.

"Let's focus on that and let the Legislature decide what they would like this technology to do, assuming this pilot is successful," Lites?told the?Bee.

The bill,? which cleared the Senate and is now in the Assembly Appropriations Committee, ?has many supporters, but no opposition is listed. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, however, said it's both ?surprised and disappointed that the bill is proceeding without serious exploration of the privacy risks.

"Just because it's a pilot doesn't excuse the Legislature of responsibility,"? said Lee Tien, senior staff attorney at the nonprofit group.

Although?concerns over privacy have, in fact, come up, Lites dismissed them given that this is an opt-in program and security controls will be in place to protect information.

86 dead and more than hundred tourists trapped in northwest China

More than 100 tourists became trapped in Wenxian County in northwest China's Gansu Province Friday night after a rain-triggered landslide and mudslide cut off traffic, local authorities said Saturday.

The tourists, including 38 Vietnamese nationals, became trapped in Wenxian's Yulei Township at about 9 p.m. while en route to Jiuzhaigou, a renowned nature reserve in neighboring province of Sichuan, according to the county government.

They were accommodated in the county's Bikou Township Friday night.

Bikou is about 200 km away from Jiuzhaigou.
Road repair work is still under way in the area.

Mudslides and flooding are common in China?s mountainous areas, killing hundreds of people every year, but in some areas the current floods are already the worst in half a century. This flood has killed at least 86 people, state media said Saturday.

Jeff Bezos to open Center for Innovation this fall, aims to inspire young would-be entrepreneurs

Bezos Center for Innovation to open this fall

What's an e-commerce tycoon to do after funding everything from nuclear fusion startups to commercial spaceflight ventures? Why, help develop a museum exhibit to inspire young folks and teach them about innovation, of course. After more than two years of development and $10 million from Jeff Bezos' own pockets, the Museum of History and Industry will open the doors to the Bezos Center for Innovation on October 12th. Not only does the center aim to help visitors learn about "the importance of innovation" through interactive exhibits, but it will toot Seattle's horn for being "the birthplace of so many trailblazing companies." If you can't make it to The Emerald City, we're sure Bezos has a few learning alternatives in mind.

(AP) ? One of the Chinese teenagers who died in the Asiana Airlines disaster was struck by a fire truck while she was covered in foam that crews had sprayed to douse the fire aboard the plane, police said Friday.

It wasn't clear, however, whether 16-year-old Ye Meng Yuan was already dead or whether she was alive after the crash Saturday at San Francisco airport.

Authorities were still trying to determine the cause of death, and San Mateo County coroner Robert Foucrault said his initial results would likely be released sometime next week. He would not comment on the police investigation.

"The police department is responsible for the accident investigation, and my office is responsible for determining the cause and manner of death," Foucrault said.

Police officials confirmed that she was hit by the truck. She was on the ground and covered in the foam.

"When the fire truck repositioned itself to continue battling flames from the fuselage, the victim passenger was found in the tire track of the fire truck," police spokesman Albie Esparza said.

Asiana Flight 214 collided with a rocky seawall just short of its intended airport runway on Saturday. Two people were killed and dozens of others injured although most suffered minor injuries. Investigators have said the plane came in too low and slow.

Nearly a week after the crash, investigators have pieced together an outline of the event ? what should have been a smooth landing by seasoned pilots turning into a disaster.

With each new bit of information, the picture emerging is of pilots who were supposed to be closely monitoring the plane's airspeed, but who didn't realize until too late that the aircraft was dangerously low and slow. Nothing disclosed so far by the National Transportation Safety Board investigators indicates any problems with the Boeing 777's engines or the functioning of its computers and automated systems.

"The first thing that's taught to a pilot is to look at the airspeed indicator. It is the most important instrument in the cockpit," said Lee Collins, a pilot with 29 years and 18,000 hours experience flying a variety of airliners. "Airspeed is everything. You have airspeed, you live. You don't, you die."

Investigators are still trying to nail down hundreds of details about the crash last Saturday that killed two people and injured dozens. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman has cautioned against reaching conclusions.

But investigators already know a great deal. They've listened to the Boeing 777's voice recorder, which captured the last two hours of conversation in the cockpit. They've downloaded its flight data recorder, which captured 1,400 indicators of what was happening on the plane, from the temperatures inside and out to the positions of cockpit instruments.

The flight's four pilots have been interviewed, as have passengers and dozens of witnesses. Air traffic control recordings and video of the flight's last moments, including the crash itself, have been examined.

Here's what investigators have revealed about a Seoul-to-San Francisco flight that was normal until its last minutes, when the wide-body jet carrying 307 people rapidly lost altitude:

The pilot flying the plane, Lee Gang-kuk, 46, had nearly 10,000 hours of flying experience, but just 35 hours flying a Boeing 777. He had recently completed training that qualified him to fly passengers in the 777, and was about halfway through his post-qualification training. He was seated in the left cockpit pilot seat. In the co-pilot position was Lee Jeong-Min, an experienced captain who was supervising Lee Gang-kuk's training. It was Lee Gang-kuk's first time landing a 777 in San Francisco.

At 11:19:23 PDT, after a nearly 11-hour flight, the plane was traveling over the San Francisco Peninsula. The weather was near perfect, sunny with light winds.

Lee Jeong-Min and a third pilot sitting in a jump seat just behind the main seats, a first officer, were supposed to be monitoring the plane's controls. One of their most important jobs was to closely monitor the plane's two airspeed indicators. In the U.S., if an amber bar is more than five knots above or below the target speed during landing, the pilot flying is supposed to abort and make another attempt, according to pilots interviewed by The Associated Press.

As the plane descended to 1,600 feet, the autopilot was turned off. At 1,400 feet, the plane's airspeed was about 170 knots.

The flight data recorder shows the plane's autothrottle ? similar to a car's cruise control ? was set on idle during the approach, Hersman said, and that there were multiple commands at times given to the autothrottle and autopilot.

At 11:26:58 and 1,000 feet, the pilots made contact with the airport tower. When they were cleared to land 12 seconds later, the plane's altitude had dropped to about 600 feet. The plane was configured for its approach and the landing gear was down. The airspeed was about 149 knots. A target speed of 137 knots was set.

At 500 feet there was an audible automated altitude alert. The airspeed was about 134 knots. At this point that pilots realized they weren't properly lined up with the runway, Hersman said.

"Between 500 and 200 feet, they had a lateral deviation and they were low. They were trying to correct at that point," she said.

At 200 feet and another automated altitude call out, the airspeed had slowed to 118 knots ? well below the target level.

At this point, U.S. pilots would typically call for an aborted landing because the plane was more than 5 knots below its target speed, Collins said. But at no point in between 500 and 100 feet does the voice recorder show the pilots making any comment related to airspeed, Hersman said at a briefing Thursday.

Hersman said at earlier briefings that it was not until 200 feet ? 16 seconds before impact ? that Lee Jeong-Min, the instructor pilot "recognized the auto-throttles were not maintaining speed."

At 125 feet and 112 knots, both throttles started moving forward, indicating more fuel was being sent to the engines to increase power and speed. That was eight seconds before impact. Even if the autothrottles weren't fully turned on, either of the pilots in the two front seats could reach down and manually push the throttle levers forward to increase power.

It was about this time that the cockpit voice recorder indicated the first officer ? the third pilot seating behind the front two pilots ? realized the plane was traveling too slowly and called for an increase in speed.

A second later, Lee Gang-kuk's yoke can be heard rattling violently on the voice recorder. This is the sound of a stick shaker going off, a piece of safety equipment that tells a pilot the plane is about to stall because it has slowed to a dangerous speed and lost lift.

When the pilots in the two front seats realized the plane was in trouble, they both reached for the throttle. Passengers heard a loud roar as the plane revved up in a last-minute attempt to abort the landing.

At three seconds before impact, the plane reached its slowest speed of 103 knots. Its engines were at 50 percent power and power was increasing. At this time, one of the pilots called for an aborted landing.

At one and a half seconds before impact, another of the pilots calls for an aborted landing.

At 11:28, with the airspeed up three knots, the landing gear, followed by the plane's tail, collided with the seawall just short of Runway 28 Left. The plane careened wildly before slamming down onto the tarmac and sliding about 1,000 feet. The tail was sheared off and three flight attendants seated in the back of the plane fell out. Rocks from the seawall and pieces of the mangled landing gear were strewn along the runway.

The NTSB's investigation is being followed closely by pilots in the U.S. and around the world. At one gathering of pilots in Dallas Wednesday night, the discussion centered on why the Asiana pilots didn't realize their low speed sooner. No one had an answer.

"There are a lot of very experienced airline pilots who are scratching their heads right now," Collins said.

Meanwhile, crews removing the plane's wreckage encountered smoke early Friday morning. The smoke was captured by KGO-TV cameras, and the news station said it occurred moments after crews used a sling to lift the fuselage.

Heat and friction generated while crews were cutting the fuselage of Asiana Flight 214 might be to blame for the smoke, airport spokesman Doug Yakel said.

He said fire trucks at the scene doused the smoke before it turned into a fire.

Yakel said the fuselage was cut into two pieces to make it easier to transport. Much of the wreckage has now been removed from the site.

Airport officials hope to re-open the runway by late Sunday. The closure has led to flight cancellations and delays.

Burgeoning agent Jay-Z is wooing?Los Angeles Dodgers?star?Yasiel Puig, hoping to add the 22-year-old to the growing stable of athletes he represents, two sources told?Yahoo! Sports.

During a mid-June trip to?New York, Puig was invited to a party at a club Jay-Z owns after a Dodgers teammate passed along the rapper?s contact information, one source said. Between the lifestyle and marketing plan offered by?Roc Nation Sports, Puig left the meeting intrigued.

Roc Nation Sports? only other baseball client at this point is Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano. The newly-founded agency also represents?Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, quarterback Geno Smith of the Jets and WNBA rookie Skylar Diggins.

Puig, 22, is batting .407/.441/.659 with eight home runs, five stolen bases, 19 RBI and 26 runs scored through his first 35 major league games. He defected from his native Cuba in 2012 and went on to sign a seven-year, $42 million free agent contract with Los Angeles. He can?t become a free agent until after the 2018 season.

Passan hears that Jay-Z is also courting A?s outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, another Cuban defector.

(AP) ? The pilots of Asiana Flight 214 relied on automated cockpit equipment to control the jetliner's speed as they landed at San Francisco airport, but realized too late they were flying too low and too slow before the aircraft crashed, investigators said Tuesday.

The new details were not conclusive about the cause of Saturday's crash, but they raised potential areas of focus: Was there a mistake made in setting the automatic speed control, did it malfunction or were the pilots not fully aware of what the plane was doing?

One of the most puzzling aspects of the crash has been why the wide-body Boeing 777 jet came in far too low and slow, clipping its landing gear and then its tail on a rocky seawall just short the runway. The crash killed two of the 307 people and injured scores of others, most not seriously.

Among those injured were two flight attendants in the back of the plane, who survived despite being thrown onto the runway when the plane slammed into the seawall and the tail broke off.

National Transportation Safety Board chairman Deborah Hersman said the autothrottle was set for 157 mph and the pilots assumed it was controlling the plane's airspeed. However, the autothrottle was only "armed" or ready for activation, she said.

Hersman said the pilot at the controls, identified by Korean authorities as Lee Gang-guk, was only about halfway through his training on the Boeing 777 and was landing that type of aircraft at the San Francisco airport for the first time ever. And the co-pilot, identified as Lee Jeong-Min, was on his first trip as a flight instructor.

In the 777, turning the autothrottle on is a two-step process ? first it is armed, then it is engaged, Boeing pilots said. Hersman didn't say whether the Asiana's autothrottle was engaged.

Bob Coffman, an American Airlines captain who has flown 777s, said the only way he could think of for Asiana plane to slow as quickly at the NTSB has described would be if somehow the autothrottle has shifted into the idle mode.

Only moments before the crash did the training captain realize the autothrottle wasn't controlling the plane's speed, Hersman said.

"This is one of the two hallmarks of complexity and challenge in the industry right now," said Doug Moss, an Airbus A320 a pilot for a major U.S. airline and an aviation safety consultant in Torrance, Calif. "It's automation confusion because from what Deborah Hersman said, it appears very likely the pilots were confused as to what autothrottle and pitch mode the airplane was in. It's very likely they believed the autothrottles were on when in fact they were only armed."

Their last second efforts to rev the plane back up and abort the landing failed, although numerous survivors report hearing the engines roar just before impact.

"We just seemed to be flying in way too low. Last couple seconds before it happened the engines really revved into high gear. Just waaah! Like the captain was saying 'oh no, we gotta get out of here.' And then, boom! The back end just lifted up, just really jolted everybody in their seats," said crash survivor Elliot Stone, who owns a martial arts studio in Scotts Valley.

While in the U.S., drug and alcohol tests are standard procedure after air accidents, this is not required for foreign pilots and Hersman said the Asiana pilots had not undergone any testing

A final determination on the cause of the crash is months away, and Hersman cautioned against drawing any conclusions based on the information revealed so far:

Seven seconds before impact, someone in the cockpit asked for more speed after apparently noticing that the jet was flying far slower than its recommended landing speed. A few seconds later, the yoke began to vibrate violently, an automatic warning telling the pilot the plane is losing lift and in imminent danger of an aerodynamic stall. One and a half seconds before impact came a command to abort the landing.

There's been no indication, from verbal calls or mechanical issues, that an emergency was ever declared by pilots. Most airlines would require all four pilots to be present for the landing, the time when something is most likely to go wrong, experienced pilots said. In addition to the two pilots, a third was "monitoring" the landing from a jumpseat, while a fourth was in the rear of the cabin.

"If there are four pilots there, even if you are sitting on a jump seat, that's something you watch ? the airspeed and the descent profile," said John Cox, a former US Airways pilot and former Air Line Pilots Association accident investigator.

The Air Line Pilots Association, the world's largest pilots union, criticized Hersman for fueling speculation that the crash is the result of pilot error before all the facts have been determined.

"The NTSB's release of incomplete, out-of-context information has fueled rampant speculation about the cause of the accident," the union said in a statement Tuesday. "The field phase of the investigation is barely three days old, and the pilots on the flight deck, at the controls of the aircraft, had little opportunity to provide vital information as to what exactly happened during the event before disclosing data recorded during the last moments of the flight. "

Hersman said the board was following its usual pattern of trying to be transparent by releasing information as it is known.

By Tuesday afternoon, NTSB interviews with three pilots were complete and the fourth was underway.

In addition, authorities were reviewing the initial rescue efforts after fire officials acknowledged that one of their trucks might have run over one of the two Chinese teenagers killed in the crash. The students, Wang Linjia and Ye Mengyuan, were part of a larger group headed for a Christian summer camp with dozens of classmates.

Asiana President Yoon Young-doo arrived in San Francisco from South Korea on Tuesday morning, fighting his way through a pack of journalists outside customs.

He met with and apologized to injured passengers, family members and survivors. But Yoon said he can't meet with the Asiana pilots because no outside contact with them is allowed until the investigation is completed.

More than 180 people aboard the plane went to hospitals with injuries. But remarkably, more than a third didn't even require hospitalization.

The passengers included 141 Chinese, 77 South Koreans, 64 Americans, three Canadians, three Indians, one Japanese, one Vietnamese and one person from France.

South Korea officials said 39 people remained hospitalized in seven different hospitals in San Francisco.

The flight originated in Shanghai, China, and stopped over in Seoul, South Korea, before making the nearly 11-hour trip to San Francisco.

Florida counties brace for violence in Zimmerman case

Law enforcement agencies in several Florida counties are preparing for the worst should the jury in the George Zimmerman case return a 'not guilty' verdict in a case that has divided the whole country. It is feared that if Zimmerman is not found guilty of murder, in the Trayvon Martin case, members of the public may become violent and take justice into their own hands. Authorities are making contingency plans should violence break out.

    ?

?[We are] working closely with the Sanford Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies [to coordinate] a response plan in anticipation of the verdict,? the sheriff?s office said in a statement reported by Breitbart.com.

    ?

Authorities in Broward County have released a video entitled ?Raise Your Voice, Not Your Hands? in the hope that it will quell outrage. The video urges viewers to focus on non-violent forms of protest rather than resorting to violence. In the video, a young woman and a young man appear. One of them advises, ?Let?s give violence a rest, because we can easily end up arrested.? Broward County lies some 200 miles south of Sanford, where the Trayvon Martin killing occured.

    ?

Tensions are high not only in Seminole County, where the Zimmerman trial is still ongoing, but elsewhere in the United States. Protests followed the shooting of the 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in 2012 when thousands turned out in a number of cities wearing hooded sweatshirts in tribute to the hoodie-wearing boy who was shot to death by Zimmerman. Rallies have occured outside of the courthouse as media show real-time coverage of the trial.?

    ?

The Broward County video features law enforcement officers, teenagers and James Jones, a Miami Heat basketball player. Advocating peace, the video asks viewers?

The clip encourages viewers "to stand together as one ? no cuffs no guns. Let's give violence a rest because we can easily end up arrested ? Don't lack composure because in one instance it could be over so let's make the choice and raise your voice and not your hands."

    ?

Defense lawyer Mark O'Mara, told Piers Morgan of CNN recently that he is worried about Zimmerman's safety. "My client will never be safe because there are a percentage of the population who are angry, they're upset and they may well take it out on him," O'Mara said. "So he'll never be safe." People in the community are watching the case closely. Charges of racism have been hurled by disgruntled observers who fear that the Zimmerman verdict will not be considered fairly.?

    ?

Trayvon?Martin was a 17-year-old black teenager, while George Zimmerman has been described as an Hispanic and the son of an American father and a Peruvian mother.?

(AP) ? Country music stars and fans joined together to urge prayers for Randy Travis overnight as he recovered from brain surgery following a stroke at a Texas hospital.

Travis remained in critical condition after surgery Wednesday night to relieve pressure on his brain, publicist Kirt Webster said. The 54-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer had been improving while being treated for heart failure caused by a viral infection when he had the stroke.

Steady concern for Travis, a popular and pivotal figure in country music, turned to active support as stars like Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum and Martina McBride and the Grand Ole Opry used Twitter to join Webster's call for prayers. Hundreds of users reached out using the hashtag PrayforRandy.

"We're all pulling for you Randy," Brad Paisley said via Twitter.

The setback occurred hours after doctors said Travis was showing signs of improvement since the start of treatment Sunday for congestive heart failure.

It was not clear what kind of stroke Travis suffered. The most common type of stroke is caused by a blood clot that travels to the brain. The other kind happens when a blood vessel in the head bursts or leaks. Stroke patients who get treatment quickly are usually given a drug to dissolve the clot that caused the stroke.

Drs. William Gray and Michael Mack of the Baylor Health Care System in Texas described Travis' condition and hospitalization in a video statement earlier Wednesday.

"His condition has stabilized, and he has shown signs of improvement," Mack said in the video. "On behalf of Mr. Travis' family, friends and associates, we would like to express our extreme gratitude for the overwhelming affection and support that Mr. Travis has received."

The "Three Wooden Crosses" singer was in good health until three weeks before he was hospitalized, when he contracted a viral upper respiratory infection, Gray said.

The viral illness led to a weakened heart muscle that eventually worsened into heart failure.

Travis was admitted to Baylor Medical Center McKinney near his home in Tioga, about 60 miles north of Dallas, through the emergency room Sunday. The singer underwent a procedure to have a pump inserted by catheter that helps increase blood flow before being transferred to The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano.

Travis' illness comes as he's been trying to put his life back together following a series of embarrassing public incidents involving alcohol. Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January following an arrest last year and received two years of probation and a $2,000 fine. He was required to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility and complete 100 hours of community service.

He recently made several public appearances, including a spot on the Country Music Association Festival's nightly concert lineup and a poignant performance at George Jones' funeral.

Webster said from the hospital Travis' fiancee Mary Beougher was at his side and that he is surrounded by family and friends, including his brother, Dennis Traywick, and his pastor, Jeff Perry. Kenny Rogers, the Oak Ridge Boys, Chuck Norris and several others have called to check in on Travis.

The North Carolina-born Travis is a traditional country purist known for hits "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "I Told You So." His 1986 Warner Bros. debut album "Storms of Life" sold 4 million copies, and helped return country music to the sound of Hank Williams and George Jones.

"I always feel like he's part of our family, he's in our family," Keith Urban said in an interview Wednesday morning in Nashville. "And I was one of those guys in Australia that bought 'Storms of Life' and became a Randy fan very quickly in late '80s, and I really feel for him right now."

Manchester City land in South Africa for pre-season tour as Manuel Pellegrini reveals he could have joined Liverpool

    By Andy Hampson, Press Association

    |

Manuel Pellegrini has revealed he almost joined Liverpool, as well as being approached by new club Manchester City six years ago.

City's hierarchy this summer identified Pellegrini as the man they believe is best equipped to help deliver on a stated ambition of winning five trophies in the next five seasons.

He led his new troops on their globetrotting pre-season tour, which first sees them stop over in South Africa to take part in the Nelson Mandela invitational tournament, where they will play two local sides.

Captain Vincent Kompany took to Twitter to post pictures as they arrived in Durban on Thursday morning.

From there, they will travel to Asia to take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy - also contested by Tottenham and Sunderland before heading to Germany, where they will first play AC Milan with Bayern Munich and Brazilian giants Sao Paulo also competing for the Audi Cup.

Their travels are rounded off by a trip to Finland to take on Premier League rivals Arsenal in a showpiece friendly, before Pellegrini takes charge of his first domestic game for the visit of Newcastle.

Yet Pellegrini might already have been in place had former owner Thaksin Shinawatra lured him from Villarreal in 2007 before turning to Sven-Goran Eriksson.

And that was not 59-year-old Pellegrini's only brush with the Barclays Premier League, with Liverpool also apparently interested three years ago.

In 2010, after Rafael Benitez left Anfield, Pellegrini was available following his dismissal by Real Madrid but Malaga proved his next destination.

The Chilean, speaking as he was formally unveiled as City's new boss, said: 'I had twice chances to arrive here before.

'One was to Manchester City but with the other owners, not these owners.

'Liverpool, I was very near, after Real Madrid, to arrive at Liverpool.

'But for different things, it was not the moment. Now it is the right moment with the right club.'

Pellegrini, 59, left Malaga to succeed Roberto Mancini, who was sacked in May just a year after guiding the club to the Premier League title.

The Italian had also won the FA Cup the previous year and still managed to finish runner-up in both competitions last season - only for that not to be deemed good enough.

Pellegrini is not daunted by such lofty expectations, nor by the additional challenges of improving the team's style or helping develop a "holistic" approach to all footballing matters.

Finally arrived: Pellegrini was approached to join City by former owner Thaksin Shinawatra, who opted for Sven-Goran Eriksson (below) instead in 2007

He said: 'I am not concerned about that.

'I am here, it is not only to win trophies - the Premier League, the FA Cup or the Champions League.

'I am here to work with young players and the professional team.

'Winning trophies is important but it is not just about that.'

City have spent close to ?45million this summer on two new players in Fernandinho and Jesus Navas and the spending is set to continue with several other players linked.

Yet Pellegrini is well aware the club need to curtail their spending and sustain their strength through their own youth system in the future.

He said: 'As a coach, of course we always want immediate success.

'We are trying to have a strong squad in all positions. If that will bring us trophies, perfect - we have more chances to win that way.

'But in the same way we are working with young players and we will continue to. It is impossible every year to buy three, four, five players.

'We need a mix with young players. We need to work exactly the same with the under-21s and the first team.

'A lot of things I think will be improved. From what Roberto and all the other coaches of Manchester City have done over the years, we will continue.'

They compete in the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong later this month before playing a tournament in Munich and then facing Arsenal in a friendly in Helsinki.

Their recruitment drive will continue amid the schedule - with a striker a top priority after the recent sale of Carlos Tevez - but Pellegrini is prepared to be patient.

He said: 'I am not sure if they can arrive when we are in South Africa and Hong Kong.

'It is important to arrive the players we need, we are not in a hurry. We have different choices and we hope we can get the players we want.'

City have made clear their transfer policy is now being driven by director of football Txiki Begiristain but Pellegrini does have input and he was consulted over the signings of Navas and Fernandinho.

He said: 'I signed here 15, 20 days ago - one month.

'When I finished the Spanish league with Malaga, when I decided not to stay there and come here, I started talking with Txiki (about) the different things."

Pellegrini has shown his coaching credentials by guiding Villarreal and Malaga to the latter stages of the Champions League but his reputed man-management skills were also attractive.

It was felt there was discord in the dressing room under Mancini.

Pellegrini said: 'I don't want to talk about what happened in the past.

'You always have problems sometimes with some players - I had it in the past - but I think we can have very good relations.'
